        Back with the answer to the Tulsa T question;

        I worked for Ron Heller while I was at Wichita State. One day he told me a story of how he picked up 7 technical fouls as an assistant for WSU when they were playing at Tulsa. In those days, there wasn't a limit to technicals, so he wasn't thrown out of the game. This was when he worked with Gary Thompson, and I'll bet Coach Thompson was less than amused.

        I had fun with it because later in the week, Ron was doing a radio broadcast of the Shockers with Bill Land, and I called in at halftime and asked Bill who held the record for technicals. He started laughing, passed the question to Coach Heller, and made him explain the game and the calls. Coach said, "I think I recognize the caller, and I'll deal with him when I get back to the office."

          That's a funny story indeed! That makes me think of Mr. Heller and miss hearing his voice. He was a good broadcaster. :cry:

            That we can sell out a 15,000 seat arena with a quality opponent and not fill a 10,500 seat arena without one.

                ....and your idea of a quality team is one with a 5-5 record?

                  They are better than their record, a historic rival, and yes much more quality than borderline Div 2 teams.

                    My guess is they're likely better than their record indicates.

                        Lets not forget that being the first basketball game played there has to have sold a few tickets as well.

                          I don't think we have a problem filling CKA when it's a league game or an attractive opponent ....like Tulsa or Texas Tech.....

                            Per Pomeroy Tulsa is predicted to be a mid-pack conference USA team which is 2 up on the MVC. They also have beaten Stanford and Missouri State. I'm not saying they are Duke or anything but compared to these cupcakes:

                            UMKC / 5 - 4 / Summit / 22nd ranked conference
                            Nicholls State / 2 - 4 / Southland / 25th ranked conference
                            Chicago State / 1 - 10 / Great West / 32nd ranked conference
                            Texas Southern / 2 - 7 / SWAC / 33rd ranked conference
                            Alabama A & M / 0 - 5 / SWAC / 33rd ranked conference

                            then yeah they are a quality opponent - in fact they are by far our best home opponent of the non conference! That shows you how bad our home schedule was this year.

                              The game this year has a novelty aspect that explains a sellout. That the opponent is Tulsa - even if they are down this year - factors in.

                              If this game is played at IBA in two years I would not expect a sellout unless the Shocks landed a recruit like Ellis or are expected to have a year at least as good as this season (meaning we've had continued success and expanded the bandwagon).
