I think even if we were dominating the Valley every year, I'd still like to see us try to get to a better conference. I'm to the point where I understand it's not going to happen, but I still like to think about it. FWIW, Butler and Gonzaga play in front of 6000-7000 fans. Butler averaged 6800 and Gonzaga's capacity is 6000.

I think all would agree with your sentiments but the reality is there is not a better conference that wsu could consider moving to. What wsu needs to do is just dominate the conference it is in and good things will happen. we should also realize wsu is never going to get handouts from the mvc. If there is anyway they (mvc) can screw wsu they will.

Did anyone watch BYU v USU last evening? Jimmer did just enough to hold off the Aggies by 6. The game was at BYU. The Aggies are really good again this season, and unless I miss my guess, are a road team in the BB this season. Tai Wesley (sp?) with a monster posterizing early in the contest.

Not sure what your getting at here, Doc. Doesn't USU come here next year as the return game for last year's BB? I don't think we'll be matched up against them again in this year BB. That would have them coming here two years in a row.

One way to look at what makes a strong conference is to evaluate the targeted bottom half. My prediction of the bottom half of the Valley is Bradley, Drake, Evansville, SIU & Indiana State. These sisters are weaker than weak. It will hurt the Valley overall. At this point the MVC is 16-8, which is underachieving. IMO the top three, will be WSU, Creighton & MSU (in that order). I hope in addition to the Shox, one or both make the dance. The noncon will make or break that mission.

What has CU done to prove they will be improved this year?

I agree with our Bear friend. CU may get better when whatshisface is eligible, but at this point they have NOT looked good at all. We may have to hope for UNI to get it together if we want three teams.

Creighton will improve on their 6-6 noncon record from a year ago, granted 3 losses were to top-25 teams. This year there noncon is pathetic in they play 7 teams with a +200 RPI from last season, although they do play Iowa St. & Nebraska from the B-12 (I know...so what), Northwestern from the Big-10 & nationally ranked BYU.

Greg McDermott can coach in this league. Remember, He took over N. Iowa when they were near bottom feeders in the Valley and took them to near the top his last 3 or 4 years.

Antoine Young will be one of the top 3 or 4 PG's in the league; Kenny Lawson is...well, Kenny Lawson; there is a great compliment of returning players like Darryl Ashford, Wayne Runnels, Casey harriman, Kaleb Korver (will the Korver name never end) and Josh Jones. The early vote for newcomer of the year is Doug McDermott (coaches son) who is averaging 13p/5r a game. Jahenns Manigat, a guard from Canada, is off to a decent start as well. Then, after the holidays Greg Echenique, the 6-9, 270 lb monster transfer from Rutgers, will be eligible.

Don't get me wrong, M. State will be right there. Kyle Weems could arguably be the best player in the conference. Jermaine Mallett will be tough to deal with. Adam Leonard will be one of the better guards in the conference. Nafis Ricks, like Mallett is tough as nails & Will Creekmore won't hurt you in the post. I'm not convinced yet they have quality depth, as only two other players get any real playing time.

Hey, I dislike the beakers just like most SN members, but it doesn't mean they won't be improved from last year and make some noise in the top-3...IMO.

Yeah, bad post by me. I was first referring to SB's correct breakdown of the state of the Valley.

Totally separate from that, I was commenting the USU is pretty darned solid again this season, and wondered aloud if there would be a chance they could be assigned to us again, this time in Wichita? They are a road team this year, they haven't opted out (as far as I know) and we both anticipate being fairly solid. It would not surprise me if they were the highest RPI road team.


Is there any reason they can't come to Wichita this season, other than it would be 2 years in a row (ie they don't want to)? I am not hinting they don't want to come here, I am just asking is there anything that says they can't.

That's an interesting concept. If we should happen to get USU here in BB, then we would likely have a home-and-home with them with both games played in 2011-12.

I understand ANYONE getting fired up, and it's sports so you are going to have some of that, but the frequency with which it occurs in Manhattan (3 years in?) is unacceptable imho.
