What I thought was truly ironic was how they was the announcers were saying stuff like "the MVC has a great basketball tradition, history, etc.". Yet they were listing a stat that clearly showed they knew nothing about the history of the MVC.

(AP) In an NCAA tournament full of upsets, Northern Iowa pulled off the biggest one: The Panthers took down mighty Kansas. UNI has become the eighth Valley team to reach the Sweet 16 since 1994. Notably, the Missouri Valley has received just 33 total bids from 1994-2010, meaning nearly one of every four Valley NCAA berths since 1994 have resulted in a Sweet 16 trip.

That is a pretty damn good record for the MVC

Actually this is a stat that should be used to argue for more At-Large bids for the Valley.

The Valley has only had 16 at large bids from 1994 to 2010 and 7 of those 16 at-large teams made it to the sweet 16 (44%).

That is a pretty good stat to throw out to show that we have proven ourselves in the dance.

I love Kevin Harlan since listening to him do the Chiefs radio broadcasts back in the day, "Ohhhh baby what a play!".
Harlan is a KU grad and he sucks.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

I enjoyed Harlan, too, when he did Chiefs games, but now I can say with confidence he doesn't hold a candle to Mitch Holthus -- either as Voice of the Chiefs or knowledge of the Valley.

Just an interesting tidbit on commentators. I happened to be in the car listening to pre-game of KU's game vs. Lehigh. Bob and Chris were courtside while UNI was beating UNLV. It became apparent quickly that neither had any insight on either team, especially UNI (or the Valley)

Chris made a comment about the fact that the Valley only had one team in the tournament this year, which normally wouldn't be the case, but then stated he didn't think the Valley had ever had more than 2 teams receive a bid. All I could think about was Bradley beating them to advance to the sweet 16. Don't they remember that? Or have the KU faithful successfully put that out of their minds.

While this display was happening, Ali was drilling a three to put UNI up for good against the rebels. Both Chris and Bob tried to pronounce his name with no luck, then just gave up.

On B&B this am someone brought up this tid bit and Bob said the fault lay with uni in that the info sheet they (uni) gave cbs contained the info as it was relayed by the announcers. Later the mistake was discovered and thats when they tried to "fix" it. Take it with a grain of salt.

Could it be that UNI authored that information to make themselves appear better than they are at the expense of the rest of the Valley? Yes!

If you visit UNIPanthers.com and look at their weekly release advancing the KU game, it has the stat correct. It says Indiana State is the last MVC tourney champ to advance to the Sweet 16.

I assume someone just read that wrong. Even if it was originally wrong, the two facts above that one deal with MVC sweet 16 teams in recent years, directly refuting any notion about Indiana State being the last mvc sweet 16 team. So there's really no excuse for the TV people.

My respect for what UNI just accomplished against the beakers has been tempered just a bit due to the above release. This entire, nation-wide mess - dedicated to just how often the MVC has or has not been to the S16 - is a direct result of some sports communication nitwit at UNI? Seriously!?!

Cherry-picking odd, random data to fluff up your resume at the accidental expense of your conference is unacceptable. No one, I mean no one, cares about when the last time the "MVC tournament champion" made the S16. Further, you're just asking for trouble - trouble exactly like what we have here - when you put data points like this out there, and somehow expect the statistically-overwhelmed media members covering the tourney to decipher the minute differences.

Someone needs to be beat about the head with a rubber duck.

That release looks like any school's pregame release: a bunch of random nearly useless facts that mostly don't even make the airwaves. The TV morons are the ones to blame here.

It's called research for a reason , and the TV anal lists did none
From the road I listen (Tune In radio) at home I watch ( season Ticks )

The last MVC team to play Kansas in the NCAA Tournament was Bradley in 2006. Bradley scored a 77-73 victory over the No. 4-seeded Jayhawks on its way to the Sweet 16
Wow, good job UNI SID. Good research.

Well, I was listening to KGSO on my way home from work and Fox Sports Radio has Myers & Hartman on. They're of course talking about the Northern Iowa win over Kansas.

One of them kept saying Iowa State for Northern Iowa and the other guy had to keep correcting him. Then, paraphrasing what he next said, "We're getting to know more about the Missouri Valley conference with Northern Iowa being the first team from the Missouri Valley to get to the sweet 16 since Indiana State in 1979."

TV guys usually just scan these things before the game and mark what they think is a "good stat" and go from there. I'm sure Harlan read this before hand, noted it as a relevant stat for mid-game if it was close, then instead of reading it word for word from the sheet during the game, he paraphrased to make it sound more "off the cuff" and mis-quoted the information. Stuff happens. I heard it and instantly said "that's way off" and even got a few texts saying "CBS got some bad info there..." but shrugged it off and then later Harlan corrected himself. These guys don't see these teams as much as we do. Harlan probably hasn't even done more than 5 Valley games since 2006 anyway. I'm surprised he didn't screw up 'Ali Farokhmanesh' and 'Kwadzo Ahelegbe' over and over again......
