  • The last comment made public was that it could be Richardson or Manigault getting a red shirt.

That decision may have been made by the fact that Hannah was declared ineligible and Williams picked up 2 early fouls. If it's true that you can't have too many point guards, we're in pretty good shape. It looks like we have 4 on the roster who can play that spot.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

      Maybe. I'd guess under.
It looked pretty good from where I was sitting, compared to the early non-cons last year, at least. The crowd noise was definitely better than the first game last year.

I guess I am saying that it still sucked, but it sucked less relatively.

And TMH, you get that I agree with you, right?

        • I'll echo HockeyShock and state that the "Fifi" tag does NOT mean he is a bust, just that he isn't a bulldog yet. He still seems tentative at times and plays like he is still thinking a lot about what he need to do, instead of having his game flow.

I've already seen glimmers of what I believe is to come, and when he does start playing like a bulldog with a "just do it" inner game mental state, well, Katie-bar-the-door. Not only will he bring even more offensive potential, he will make other teams play tougher inside D which should free up our makers and shooters on the perimeter even more.

Its gonna be a fun ride, and even though its just Monticello, I can't wait for Wednesday night! ITS THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!

          :)

            • Never saw the point of the Fifi tag for Paul, Garrett or any of our players. Needlessly critical. On a positive note, seeing that kind of performance from our team without a single senior on the floor is very impressive.

              • Something to consider:

If Stutz was a basketball ready 7'0" player coming out of high school, he never would have enrolled at Wichita State. The only way a 7'0" player ends up at a program like ours is if he needs some development. He is what he is.

Expect production from him late in year 3 or by year 4. Any production before that is gravy, especially with a possible emergence from Ellis and some added depth from Blair.

I was just going to mention that I can't wait to see what happens with Clevin on the floor.

                    • I just wanted to add my 2 cents (not that it matters much) on the GS topic.

I think the way that FDU defended Stutz was far different from what Newman did.

Newman allowed GS to catch deeper in the post, and GS made some very quick moves to the basket for dunks in that game.

FDU fronted a lot more, forcing a high lob over the defender, allowing a smaller guard to come underneath and try to steal the ball. IMO, the pass in this case is just as critical as the catch, and throwing the ball too far results in GS catching it low enough to have it stripped. Once or twice the pass was perfect, the guard couldn't do anything, and GS had an easy layup. Once that pass is perfected, teams won't be able to front GS as easily.

Also, for some of the game, FDU went zone, and GS ended up on the high post a lot. He didn't look as comfortable there, so we'll have to see some improvement in that spot, but not many 7-footers are. I'd like to see Stutz develop a 10-footer that is impossible to guard.

Additionally, Stutz defensive work in the post was quite good whenever FDU got it down there. He looked much stronger, maintained position, and was difficult to shoot over. His help defense needs some work, because that's where all his fouls came from.

With a few slight improvements, I think GS will be fine this year. FDU just used an effective defense to compensate for their size disadvantage.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

                      • just a few notes;

Ellis was 4" above FDU on the tipoff, and I liked how he played against them. He is pretty quick for a 6'9" player, and his length really helps us out a lot.

Kyles can get those rebounds because he can jump out of the roof for them. Kyles was one trying to get the ball into Stutz a lot.

During the one timeout when the coaches gathered on the floor, I think they were discussing whether to play Richardson or Manigault, and they decided to play Manigault, and redshirt Richardson. Right after, Manigault came in the game. I think they made this decision because of Manigault's defense.

I think the fans are a little 'wait and see' this year.

I don't know how many times I saw Hatch under the basket fighting for the ball, and coming up with it, but it seemed quite a bit. He adds a toughness to our team that I like, and his 3 point shot is sweet again.

Murry was good as I expected him to be, but still needs more consistency to his shot. Murry and Kyles, both, are playing more like Juniors rather than Sophmores. They are going to help the team a lot this year.

I like Williams too, good overall vision, good shot, but I am undecided, for now, about Manigault. I know Defense wins ball games, but it is hardly exciting, and I have always thought that a guard that can not score is only half a guard. I think he will be okay, but it seems like he was over-hyped on Shockernet.

Durley played well. Hit more shots in a row than I had ever seen him before. He can definately get his shot off.

                            • Do you want a guard that can score or shoot? There's a difference and Kenny will be able to score when he gets more comfortable. He's not an outside shooter and nobody ever said he was. Dribble penetration is where it's at with him and he'll get there and be just fine.

Too many people become obsessed with thinking a PG has to be able to light it up in my opinion. A PGs biggest worry is running the team and getting others good looks. There's different ways to do that and you'll see it from Kenny.
