  • I don't think simply 'forgetting about it' and moving on is wise at all, but making this the focus of the just-starting season isn't very wise either. Hopefully people at the university are or will take measures to be absolutely sure that this NEVER, EVER happens again (at least), or if it's appropriate, further action can take place. I can guarantee you without any doubt Coach Marshall will make sure that whatever needs to be done, is done within his power, but I can also be pretty sure he's trying to move on and focus on what's more important--making this his best season yet.

I truly feel for Clevin. He seems like a great kid with a good head on his shoulders that just wants to play, and it's sad when bad things happen to good people.

It's time for the backups to get the job done in his absence, because--what else can they do?

      ADSE

I wonder where the buck stops or does it? Just wondering.
True story last year from STL

We met ADSE at the Shocker Pep and had a minute to meet him.

After shaking hands twice we asked him what was the most interesting part of being the AD for the first year.
Grabbing my my hand to shake it once again and with the biggest used car salesman smile looked us in the eye and said "Meeting great fans just like you!"

He turned away to shake another persons hand and said...
      The exact same thing.

WSU can do better than provide a training ground for a rookie to learn. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

      • Is it wrong that following this ordeal, I have no confidence that the leaders at WSU can adequately further our athletic programs?

Maybe a bit harsh, but maybe not.

        • Obviously, the best place to express concerns about ADES would be to communicate those concerns to his boss, President Beggs.

President Beggs will no doubt ignore any sophomoric or anonymous rants, but I am sure he would at least consider any concerns presented to him in a mature, direct and concise manner. That will be my approach.

So we're all supposed to just keep quiet on a message board and take Sexton's shortcomings up the tailpipe?

Total lack of control and backbone. This cannot happen. Something needs to happen.

We don't get to play Top 20 programs from major conferences every day. Not being full strength because of an embarrassing error in the biggest non-con game on our schedule and a chance to assert and prove ourselves is just plain DISGUSTING.

Our chance to make some noise in KC just took a huge hit.

              :-x
Pitt's top 20 this year? Nah, just messin I know what you are sayin! ;-)

It sucks, but we will be fine. Truthfully, it wouldn't have surprised me if the NCAA had suspended him for the whole darn season. They've done that before with kids not deserving. I'm still not worried about the games he is missing, truthfully we could even lose to a REALLY BAD PItt team and still recover just fine once he gets back and go on a tear.

Now...as far as the athletic department. I'm with EVERYONE about being pissed about that. NO EXCUSES at all for this. Like Doc was saying...what a wonderful way to keep a head coach!
"He called me around noon and was thrilled," Brandt said. "He said he was going to be a Shocker forever." -- RIP Guy, you WILL indeed be a Shocker forever!

              • The reason WSU isn't pressing the issue further is simple: they know they messed up.

They know the rules, they probably even knew the penalty before they even talked to the NCAA, so pressing the issue further would only make them appear as bigger fools than they already are.

How 'bout we stop feeling sorry for ourselves and get on with life.

I, too, would like a little more mea culpa from the athletic department, but it doesn't appear that's what we are going to get. That's not good and should be addressed.

The NCAA, however, is what it is. Just like in real life, there are rules that create punishments for infractions that often don't jive with punishments for other infractions. You know about them going in, and you deal with them. Fighting the system seldom gets you anywhere.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Fact is, when the NCAA notified WSU about the amateur status rules to begin with, the processes at WSU should have been changed by the AD, not after the fact of a violation. The responsibility lies with ADES. He failed to do his job. At the very least, the changes to be implemented should have his ultimate approval at WSU.

                  We need a 'REAL' AD.

Beggs had his reasons for the choice. I'm not going to say they were good or bad reasons but I doubt that you'll be able to hold him accountable; he's done a bunch of things (e.g. make the students pay $12,000,000 for a system ("Banner", etc.) with many flaws) and has not been held to account for any of the bad ones so far. I'm not a fan of many of his appointments but my opinion is as unimportant as is your opinion. Eric Sexton is an good person who might or might not be right for the job of AD; he can be a bit "political" (e.g. let's not blame anybody) but he has character and, in my experience, is honest.

                        • Sexton said, “However, the NCAA is treating all similar cases that occurred during the 2008-09 season with a withholding penalty."

I'm sure such similar cases should be public knowledge. Is it too much for WSU fans to ask to see these cases or did ADES take the NCAA at its word? This would at least answer our opinions of the NCAA in this matter.

We can then concentrate our concerns with the in-house problems. It is high time ADES step up and start taking full responsibility for his department.

Actually, a list of " all similar cases" would be nice to see.

                            • I think this has taken on a life of its own much like the aforementioned topic of pro Randy or Get rid of Randy. I think everyone on here knows how everyone else thinks about the situation. Obviously management styles among the people here vary from one extreme to a more moderate approach. Personalities, old axes to grind, and sometimes ignorance has reared its ugly head. I see where nothing is left to be gained for the continued whining and bitching that has gone on for the last week. I'm sure this will continue ad nauseum but I'm done with this topic. Most of the time the posters here are supportive and seem to be some what sensitive to programs, players and coaches. Do administrators deserve less or are they to be held to a higher measure? Just because the AD feels it best to handle things internally and not discipline anyone in the media makes him less able to do his job? Pick your battles and win them decisively is an axiom I subscribe to and taking on the ncaa in this doesn't seem to be a win win situation. ADSE has been quoted as saying changes will be made to ensure this does not happen in the future....if it does it would then show a lack of departmental control and should be addressed then. In what way has ADSE shown himself to be lacking in moral fibre that we would not take him at his word? Done. Go Shox
