Report Card for Sexton.

I'm concerned about our Athletic Director. This is an opportunity to give him honest feedback on how you think he is doing - whether a great job or poor job with feedback. Why give him the grade you are giving? We all want WSU athletics to be the best it can be, and a great deal of that success starts with our AD. This poll expires on September 15th, so grade early.

I'm giving him a "D".
Positives:
-- Great guy with charisma
-- Seemingly good at raising money
-- Deep WSU and Wichita roots
-- Family tree of WSU football legend
-- Great contacts in the Wichita area
-- Good experience as an assistant AD which is a solid platform
-- Seems to ensure fiduciary responsibility with the Athletic Department
-- Seems to ensure the programs abide by NCAA rules/regulations

Challenges
-- Has not adjusted to new role of being a leader instead of simply raising money and being the assistant AD
-- Communication seems lacking at times
-- Lost a successful tennis coach to OSU
-- Has not communicated his vision for WSU athletics
-- Does not seem to grab the coaches by the horns when needed
-- Needs to work with the media better
-- Doesn't know when to "jump in" or "take a step back" (i.e jumped in with his opinion on the shot clock fiasco when he didn't have all of the facts, but has taken a step back and been rather lethargic in being proactive with the Adams issue and Coy issue).

Overall, I'll give him a D with hope that he takes a more leadership role in growing our athletic programs, positively promoting the programs, and communicating better with meda and coaches (and players and their parents).

He could have made sure it was reviewed properly. It was a correctable error. But he fell in line with the MVC partly line and became a Elgin parrot.

It is his athletic department. They work for him. It is called leadership. Any decision that a coach may make that might have a impact on the image of the university should be discussed with the AD.

Frankly if Marshall/Stephenson were having issues with what was going on, they should be able to go to the AD to get the issues worked out. But at least from the Coy side neither coach would talk to each other - that is a sign of dysfunctional organization. Of course we don't know what the WSU side of the story is because the AD decided to just ignore it and hope it go away.

Frankly if there were truly promises made by the two coaches, then they should have honored them and the AD should be the one to make sure it happens.

ADES should not have climbed into the production truck with Elgin and stated (paraphrase), "yep, after viewing the tape, it was the right call".

The Coy "thing" did not have to happen, and certainly did not have to happen in the manner in which it occurred. All of that "thing" should have and easily could have been negated by communication by those involved and that includes ADES leading the way.

The WBB "issues" were known beforehand by ADES (reported by The Eagle), and yet due to apparent lack of discussions with the women players, the majority of them vent to the media instead of using the proper outlet (probably because it wasn't there).

Additionally, we should do what we can to hang onto our good coaches - no matter the sport. Losing any top ranked MoVal coach has the potential to hurt our overall athletic program.

I want ADES to be successful as it bodes well for the overall health of our athletic program. I simply feel he has a very large learning curve and is off to a very rocky start.

However, as you so eloquently put it, it is indeed simply my opinion and I very well could be wrong. For the sake of our programs, I hope I am wrong.
