Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

JT's strengths still are when he stays closer to the basket. He can face up at times against the right person (driving ability) but a weakness of his in the past is when he forgets who he is and how he should play and wanders too far from the basket, handles the ball too much, and shoots too many perimeter shots. Additionally, when he rebounds well offensively, he scores more.

Re: Another Stutz discussion
Originally posted by DanWe've all heard that GS is working his butt off in the weight room this summer. He definitely needs it. We've also discussed over and over again about how he could have or could still use a redshirt year.
I think the 2 best examples of similar style players we have to compare him to are Paul Miller and Greg Dreiling (McD AA). Both of these guys had the benefit of 5 years in college, although neither took a voluntary redshirt, yet it helped their careers exponentially. In looking at Garrett's stats versus Paul and Greg's from their freshmen year, while none were fanatastic, Garrett averaged about 1/2 as many points as both Paul and Greg (4.2 versus 8.1, 7.4, respectively) and less rebounds (2.6 versus 4.1 and 4.7). On the positive side GS had more blocks his first year than PM ever had in a year.
I know they are all very different players, but at the center position, I think this just further illustrates how much it can help an undeveloped big man to have that extra year. With JT and now Blair in the middle, maybe this is the year. What does everyone else think? Would Marshall really consider this type of action to prepare us for an outstanding 2011 season?
I think Stutz will be fine. He certainly has a great work ethic and I think a lot of people will be surprised at his rapid progress.

In ther first year (except Miller's redshirt year), here are the minutes, rebounds and points per 40 minutes:
Player .............Min.....Reb......Pts
Paul Miller.........607.....9.2.....14.7
P.J. Cousinard...715.....7.5.....11.0
Kyle Wilson.......637.....4.3..... 7.7
Xavier McDaniel.607.....6.8.....10.7
Garrett Stutz.....415.....8.4.....13.8
IMHO, there is plenty to build on and what's already been hasn't been what we hoped for, but certainly not all that bad."I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Think about how much Paul and Kyle improved as they got stronger and more experienced, and neither of them played here as true freshmen (expect Paul in a couple of games before the injury)."Cotton scared me - I left him alone." - B4MSU (Bear Nation poster) in reference to heckling players

If Stutz doesn't redshirt this year I doubt if he will. I don't think he will redshirt this year as he is our only true 5. Blair came here because he felt that he was being forced to play out of position at the 5 and it even took a lot of work to get Durley to consistently post up down low. GS may even be more at home at the 4, we'll have to wait until EO gets here to see if that works out.
I think that GS will gain enough weight and strength that the opposing team will have a much harder time pushing him away from the basket. If he can maintain he position he has the skills to finish in a lot of ways.

Agree with Z....I think GS will get a little better each year. He does not need to dramatically improve next year to be effective....A little stronger and a little more savy will work wonders for a 7 footer...with a good cast around him we just need a true center to be the hub...It allows everyone else to play there true positions

Oh, I don't know. You may have very well said the same type things about Patrick O'Bryant after his freshman year, but look how much better he was his sophmore year. I think the freshman year is an adjustment year for post players, while in the sophmore year, some of their talent starts showing up more.

He really could have used one more year in school.
