We can't have news of a new recruit without hyping things up a bit.

Someone start making the signs for '10-'11:

    GM for COY!
    COY for POY!

I'm not certain if I am wearing the Ass Hat, but for a brief moment during his visit, I never thought Johnny would chose WSU.

Whether it was my glass half empty outlook or a belief based upon what I knew, I am happy I was wrong and I wish him and his family all the best luck and success that is possible.

4 years of eligibility left. Of course, if he proves to be a terrific baseball player he could move on and becuase he has already redshirted a year he may be a draft eligible sophomore ala Dusty Coleman. Hopefully, he is younger than Dusty and won't be eligible for the draft until after his Junior year.

I would think we have a good shot at getting the waiver so that he would be eligible for the entire 2009-2010 basketball season.

Welcome aboard Johnny and best wishes for a great dual-career as a Shocker.

We had them them out numbered. We had Gregg Marshall and Gene Stephenson against their basketball coach. Marshall is a good recruiter, as I'm sure Phelps is also. We had an ace in the hole with Gene Stephenson. I think that may have made the difference in the end. All is good if Coy can be drafted to play basketball. If not drafted in basketball after 4 year how would that affect his position in baseball? Playing summer ball as opposed to playing to a upper tier college team?

Fun things to look at but I'm glad that he choose to become a Shocker.

If I was him, I would have also wondered about Phelps staying at Drake. Their last coach was a one and done deal due to money. At WSU he will not have to worry about the coach bolting after one good season for more money.

Wouldn't it be basically impossible to play complete seasons of both basketball and baseball? One or the other would have to be chosen as a clear and primary thrust, wouldn't it?

Are there any quotes or rumors as to which one Mr. Coy will pursue as his #1?

Someone help me with my aging, feeble mind.

Very hard to say what the ultimate deciding factors were. Initially, I thought the Shocks were probably behind the 8 ball somewhat due to Johnny's pre-existing relationship with Coach Phelps.

Obviously, our Coaching staffs also made a good impression on Johnny.

However, I wonder if it maybe came down to facilities. Shocker facilities for basketball and baseball are top notch and getting better with the new field turf, baseball locker rooms and indoor practice facility coming soon.

Or maybe he just liked Coach Marshall's kids best of all.

Or maybe he was able to get a date with Sarah McGee (is that an illegal inducement?)

In any case, Johnny is on his way to being a Shocker.

My speculation is that if he's on basketball scholarship, he plays a full season of basketball, whether it is #1 in his mind or not.

I think a Suellentrop blog post may have stated this, as well.

Oh... missed that caveat in my speed-reading, multi-tasking, work mode of SN surfing.

                        Thanks RS!

That should be reason enough to pay your own way, imho.

Johnny's brother Dickie Coy I think addressed this. He will practice and be a basketball player exclusively until basketball season is over. He can work out baseball on his own time. Once basketball is over then he is all Gene's. Gregg takes over again in the fall. Missing summer workouts (not the hugest deal) and pickup games (that is a big deal) will not help his game or developement with his team.

I should retract that a bit. I have no idea if he plans to play summer baseball or not. He could very well continue to work on his basketball skills in the summer after the College World Series is over. My assumption was out of line...sorry.

DON"T LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN !!

Depending on where he plays summer ball, he might also be participating in some of the pick-up games, and perhaps even wahtever allowable coach-player time is allowed (is it one-on-one an hour per week in the offseason?).

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."
