        • Me neither, lawmaker, what were you hoping for?

Trial by fire. He and we will be better for it.

          • Garrett definitely struggled tonight and looked like a freshman but he's had some pretty good minutes this season as well. I'd rather he get the real action experience than ride the bench. I think he and the team will ultimately benefit more from that next season ... the trade off ... we don't have him as a 5th year senior. I'm OK with that.

            • Would Marshall have recruited Stutz when he was at Winthrop?

I don't think he would have, what do you guys think?
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

              • Probably not, but just because of regional proximity. If Stutz had been in his area, then yes.

                • Stutz missed on one of the fundamentals of basketball........getting off your feet. The large photo in today's Eagle shows GS trying a short shot from floor level, while the defender (getting off the floor) gets an easy stuff.

That is one of the things he needs to work on -- jumping. That is why a 6'4" player stuffed him cleanly earlier in the season. Footwork & jumping would help his game tremendously.

                    • I imagine almost every player in the world would benefit from a redshirt year.

I would not expect a player to think he can play D-1 basketball without already have learned some jumping and footwork skills. These are basic skills that a player learns and develops in high school & summer leagues, not wait to learn during a D-1 team's season.

On a positive side, GS's new haircut is nice.

                        • Garrett's offensive game doesn't require a whole lot of polishing, but he needs strength and a concept of how to play team defense. I suggest a Pro-Am summer league against older, stronger players and 2-3 hours a day in the weight room.

DC, your evaluation of GS is surprising. His list of basics skills to work on is longer than my honey-do list. His skills require some 60 grit sandpaper, not a polishing cloth.

                            • I actually think his offensive game is refined for a freshman, it's just his lack of strength that doesn't allow him to finish. Power cleans, hack squats, and tractor tire flips down a football field please.

                              • Still interesting to read back on posters observations supporting the idea of GS benefiting from NOT having RS year. Interesting reads all way down. 8)
