We already have women's bowling and crew that I believe currently fall outside of the athletic department. Can they count?
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

I don't think they count since they are non-NCAA, but even if they did, since we have men's programs as well in those sports it doesn't help offset the gender imbalance football would create.

Let's put it this way: it would be a ton of women's sports we would have to add.

Men's track and cross country would probably be cut.

Bowling is an NCAA sport; not sure how many scholarships are available?

I saw that Tulane has bowling. Just search scholarships for bowling in NCAA. I looked and it had scholarships for women only. Do there's your ticket. At least part of it anyway.

I would assume our bowling program would have ZERO interest in being NCAA affiliated(it prevents athletes from winning money in other competitions).

I'd like to throw something out, and it's something I don't believe 100% to be true, but...I recently had a guy tell me that if a football coach would spend some time recruiting female players that Title IX becomes less of an issue. Again, I cannot imagine this to be true, however there was a story I saw in multiple places last week about the first female player on a football roster. If women are going to start playing football, I can see where that might start to be true. Thoughts? Besides that I'm crazy?

I don't think you're crazy, but the guy that told you that probably is.

What position would you recruit female players for other than maybe kicker and punter? Not to sound sexist but it would be a very rare woman that could compete athletically with D1 football players. Even male athletes that can compete at that level don't grow on trees.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

I completely agree, and I think the article I saw, the woman was recruited as a kicker. But the argument is/was that if you are "recruiting" women for your sport, it's no longer a Title IX issue. Those scholarships are available to men and women. It could become a fine line, but we're a long ways away from that being the case. But now if you start looking at other sports, baseball, golf, swimming, etc, how many of those can women compete in and be competitive?

I can't stress enough that I'm not sure I agree with it, but then, I'm not sure I don't either.

For the Title IX argument is the idea that if you sign up a couple of female players that NONE of the football scholarships count towards Title IX?

If that were the case I could see every school in the country abusing that by signing one or two girls and cutting a bunch of women's sports to save money.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't hold up at all to a Title IX challenge in court. If 99.99% of your football scholarships went to men, you can't claim that those scholarships were equally available on the basis on gender.

Maybe we should cut our poorest performing men's sport. Not sure what we would do with Eck Stadium though.
