Generally agree about basketball in New Mexico, another, and your observation about states where hoop is king is right on.

But I'm not quite so taken by the 1970 Final Four appearance. That year's FF consisted of Jacksonville (Artis Gilmore, et al.), NMSU, and St. Bonaventure along with unsurprising perennial winner UCLA. And just the previous season, Drake was in the Final Four and gave UCLA a good tussle. Times change, one might say. Still, I also believe NMSU is a step up from Bowling Green.

    • No doubt they're above B. Green in the pecking order. B. Green "never was." A great opportunity for Jans.

You must be very thin skinned in that the following two sentences from my original post (post #195) have you so worked up:

"You have to give credit to the NMSU AD for making a very shrewd pick. He was able to make a very quality hire at a very affordable salary level for NMSU. Frankly before the unfortunate events at BGSU, NMSU could not have been in the running for Jans."

I have never stated that Bowling Green was a better basketball school or that it had more NCAA success than NMSU as you keep bringing up. You are being very dishonest when you keep making statements asserting that I said that BGSU was a better basketball school. That is blatantly false. The statement above had to do with resources. NMSU athletics is in a very dire financial situation.

Below is some information that might help you to understand this.

New Mexico State University has had to shave just under $1 million from its athletic department budget in the past two years, a significant amount for a cash-strapped department at an institution struggling to make ends meet. And, unlike the state university to the north, athletics does not have the luxury of a main campus willing or able to pick up the slack for the 2016-17 year.
LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State University has had to shave nearly $1 million from its athletic department budget the past two years.

The athletics staff was made aware earlier this year of reductions to its budget caused by a $250,000 ticket revenue shortfall, a $154,400 student fees cut and a $20,400 midyear reduction by the state of New Mexico. Programs within the department each had to make cuts to their operating budgets in order to balance the department's budget, which was $17.9 million to start the fiscal year.
LAS CRUCES – With $10 million in budget cuts looming for the 2016-17 fiscal year at New Mexico State University, the NMSU athletic department had to cut nearly $400,000 from its current operating budget as well from January through February to balanc

If in fact a contract is agreed to tonight or tomorrow for Paul Weir to be the next head coach at the University of New Mexico, the blame needs to be very loud and very swiftly placed on the head of the NMSU Board of Regents and President Garrey Carruthers,” Gallagher said. “They have shown a total lack of support for not only Coach Weir, but all athletics. And in a $600 million budget, to suggest that you could not find $250,000 dollars to be able to keep and retain a coach who has dedicated the last ten years of his life to NMSU is a sad, sad scenario.

"We are where we are with our finances," Moccia said. "When we have coaches that do tremendous things, they are going to have opportunities to go to an institution that can pay tremendous amounts of money. I would never bemoan a coach to turn down money that takes care of his family. That is the nature of the business. It's a little awkward that it's to our other state school."

“I want Aggie fans to know this,” Moccia said Wednesday of losing Weir and the parameters of NMSU’s next coaching search. “This is what we’re dealing with. Athletics at New Mexico State has a mandate to balance our budget each year from (main) campus. Not an unreasonable request. We have done that in my two years here. Athletics also has a debt (from previous fiscal years), which it has been mandated to pay back. At one point, this debt was $10 million. Now it’s down to approximately $4.3 million.”

I certainly wish New Mexico State and especially Chris Jans the very best. I have no ill will towards New Mexico State.

              • Coach Jan's was a very astute hire by NMS IMO. If my memory is accurate, He was the one that was instrumental in checking out this player that other Div. 1 Programs were not noticing or offering. This player was a no * coming in and playing like an All American 5 Star during his tenure here at WSU. Then of course he was not drafted by the NBA but had a solid Rookie year for the Knicks. Yes, Ron Baker defied the odds and found the right fit to showcase these abilities. Shhhhh!!! A select few were comparing him to Mo Evans who Big Div. 1 Programs did want that also played here at WSU. Wasn't that the work of Chris Jans finding Baker who was a Maker? Likewise, DJ, the former NBA Scout, will also find us some players and get them here that will make an impact too. Great times!!!!!!!
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Not impossible, but their website shows him as AHC for seven years, and a total of 10 years on staff. If there was a break in his time, it didn't show.

Per BG site: Assistant coaches were Mark Downey, David Ragland, Corey Barker, and Jeff Clapacs DOBR.

I think I would find someone to put on staff that didn't let me do stupid things if I have had too much to drink. The staff at BG failed him there.

Yeah, because assistance are there to baby sit you. When you do stupid stuff that risks your schools integrity, it's the assistance fault they didn't baby sit you well enough.

Assistance? I saw the video, Jans never asked for any assistance. He received zero assistance. And his assistants weren't at the bar.

Also, I don't think this will happen to Jans again, to quote the ending of an old limerick, he is smarter Budweiser.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

                          • There once was a girl named Anheuser,
who said that no man could surprise her.
                            But Pabst took a chance,
found the Schlitz in her pants,
and now she is sadder Budweiser.

I have to disagree with you here. He's the leader. As a leader, he cost his staff their jobs. This is why I had to look up whether Gudino was with him at BG, because I was surprised that an assistant, after only 2 years, would go back to work for Jans. As I stated above, Gudino was not an assistant to Jans at BG.

                              • Wow am I wrong here. I thought if you had friends that friends don't let friends make mistakes. Hell next time a friend is too drunk to drive make sure you help him to his car, pat him on the ass and wish him well. I guess we will see how many of the BG assistants get hired at NMSU.
