AHC Chris Jans: In the running for New Mexico St Head Coach

nmsu (final four in 1970, lou henson) is a much, much better job than bowling green. what a great situation for chris jans. he goes to bowling green for one year (!), turns them around instantly, gets fired, rejected.. and finally ends up at nmsu just that quick?! i'd say he landed on his feet, all right.. and then some. basketball is king in kentucky, kansas, indiana, north carolina.. and new mexico too. the mad love is there for hoops.

Generally agree about basketball in New Mexico, another, and your observation about states where hoop is king is right on.

But I'm not quite so taken by the 1970 Final Four appearance. That year's FF consisted of Jacksonville (Artis Gilmore, et al.), NMSU, and St. Bonaventure along with unsurprising perennial winner UCLA. And just the previous season, Drake was in the Final Four and gave UCLA a good tussle. Times change, one might say. Still, I also believe NMSU is a step up from Bowling Green.

You must be very thin skinned in that the following two sentences from my original post (post #195) have you so worked up:

"You have to give credit to the NMSU AD for making a very shrewd pick. He was able to make a very quality hire at a very affordable salary level for NMSU. Frankly before the unfortunate events at BGSU, NMSU could not have been in the running for Jans."

I have never stated that Bowling Green was a better basketball school or that it had more NCAA success than NMSU as you keep bringing up. You are being very dishonest when you keep making statements asserting that I said that BGSU was a better basketball school. That is blatantly false. The statement above had to do with resources. NMSU athletics is in a very dire financial situation.

Below is some information that might help you to understand this.

New Mexico State University has had to shave just under $1 million from its athletic department budget in the past two years, a significant amount for a cash-strapped department at an institution struggling to make ends meet. And, unlike the state university to the north, athletics does not have the luxury of a main campus willing or able to pick up the slack for the 2016-17 year.

Coach Jan's was a very astute hire by NMS IMO. If my memory is accurate, He was the one that was instrumental in checking out this player that other Div. 1 Programs were not noticing or offering. This player was a no * coming in and playing like an All American 5 Star during his tenure here at WSU. Then of course he was not drafted by the NBA but had a solid Rookie year for the Knicks. Yes, Ron Baker defied the odds and found the right fit to showcase these abilities. Shhhhh!!! A select few were comparing him to Mo Evans who Big Div. 1 Programs did want that also played here at WSU. Wasn't that the work of Chris Jans finding Baker who was a Maker? Likewise, DJ, the former NBA Scout, will also find us some players and get them here that will make an impact too. Great times!!!!!!!

Assistance? I saw the video, Jans never asked for any assistance. He received zero assistance. And his assistants weren't at the bar.

I have to disagree with you here. He's the leader. As a leader, he cost his staff their jobs. This is why I had to look up whether Gudino was with him at BG, because I was surprised that an assistant, after only 2 years, would go back to work for Jans. As I stated above, Gudino was not an assistant to Jans at BG.

Wow am I wrong here. I thought if you had friends that friends don't let friends make mistakes. Hell next time a friend is too drunk to drive make sure you help him to his car, pat him on the ass and wish him well. I guess we will see how many of the BG assistants get hired at NMSU.
