  • Ten Years Ago Today...

Ten Years ago today, Mark Turgeon was introduced as Texas A&M's new head coach.

Mark Turgeon was introduced as Texas A&M's basketball coach Tuesday, just five days after Billy Gillispie left for Kentucky.

Certainly, we owe a lot to Turgeon for his time at WSU, but a guy who left to "get to the Sweet 16 every year" hasn't been there but once.

Part two of this story takes place 10 years ago Friday.

Wichita State will name Winthrop head coach Gregg Marshall to replace Mark Turgeon as its next men's basketball coach at a news conference Saturday afternoon, a source close to Marshall told ESPN.com Saturday.

Crazy to think that WSU's program would be where it is vs. where Turg has gone since the split.

I think he couldn't maintain success at this level, so he bailed.

That was definitely one of the best days in Shocker history! I remember it almost frame-by-frame.

          This one...

"I don't believe there is anybody more talented or a greater fit for Wichita State than Gregg Marshall. We could search for weeks, months, years and not find somebody with his talent and caliber -- somebody that fits what we need," Schaus said. "We need someone with his skill, his passion, his energy to be able to take this program to the highest level of excellence, to become a national-level program."

Hey now. Turgeon has 6 NCAA wins since leaving Wichita State. Along with advancing to the semis of the NIT

On the other hand at this "Level" Marshall has 10 NCAA wins and won the NIT.

I think we made out like bandits.

              ^^^ We did. ^^^

The truth of the matter is Turgeon couldn't cut the mustard "at this level."

Man I'd like to see what Gregg could do with a DeAndre Jordan, even for just 1 year.

WSU and MT were lucky that he had an old bud as the AD at aTm. We got a coach who could coach "at this level" very successfully and MT got to coach at "bigger programs" that could help him and Spin recruit better and look like they can coach better.

I am grateful. MT did come in at a very important time, but the numbers since don't lie.

I'm very grateful as a fan for what he accomplished here. That one Valley title was a long time coming. Kudos. In the end, though, I don't believe he could maintain success at this level. It was too much.

I think Mark would have had a Ben Jacobson like career. Not too bad, but not where we are now.

                          More than fortuitous.

Nothing but love for Turgeon, he helped us rise to the top of the Valley in its best year of the decade

Simply put: Without Turgeon, we get no Marshall.
