  • I really hope we do have an exhibition around here, mostly because I want to watch Shocker basketball.

How could you hate it? It's extra basketball! Sure it means nothing in the end, but you get to watch your team play a game, which we've all been waiting for since March. I thought KU and Mizzou renewing their rivalry for a night was great for both fan bases. Based on social media, everyone seemed to love it. Not to mention, they raised $1.75 million which is a pretty sweet bonus.

Just curious why you don't like it.

It's difficult to figure out how these teams will perform this season

"Projecting how teams might perform in the regular season is an inexact science. You can use advanced statistics and prediction models, but in the end you're still hitching your guesses to 18 and 19-year-old's fresh out of high school in many cases. So it's a difficult task — and even more so in the case of the 12 teams we're looking at today.

From most difficult to least difficult, let's take a look at which teams are particularly hard-to-gauge entering the 2017-18 season....

            Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton inherited preseason All-Big 12 first team talent Jeffrey Carroll when Underwood left for Illinois, but with his new role, he also inherited an ongoing FBI investigation that has cast a cloud over the program. The Cowboys are picked to finish last in the league, and while the talent is there to outperform that projection, the FBI's probe and uncertainty that comes with it makes OSU one of the hardest-to-gauge squads in the country.

            UConn Huskies
Which UConn will we get this season? Will it be 2011-12 UConn, a Kevin Ollie-coached team that made a run through the NCAA Tournament to secure the title as a No. 9 seed? Or will it be a repeat of the 2016-17 season, a largely disappointing campaign plagued by injuries -- and the first losing season since 1986-87? Rodney Purvis is gone, but back is leading scorer Jalen Adams, a dynamic guard who can score it and distribute the rock. It's still anyone's guess where they might finish in the AAC, though. And it's likely to be down closer to the bottom than the top of the standings with the addition of Wichita State in a suddenly top-heavy league that no longer features UConn as its darling.

VCU Rams - (potential Maui Invitational opponent)
New coach Mike Rhoades inherits a nice roster abandoned by Will Wade, but it's hard to imagine VCU -- a program now installing its third coach since Shaka Smart sleft in 2015 -- will continue chugging along at its elite level success it has enjoyed over the past few years. The emergence of Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure this season could mean a step back for the Rams -- or it could be another season in which VCU competes for an A-10 title...."

We finished 6th last year despite all our injuries and short bench. No way finish "closer to the bottom" this year.

              • Would love to see us play Creighton in an exhibition fund raiser. Regardless of where it's played, there, here
or in between it would probably sell out.

                • Hopefully this will be a huge Season of success for us. Speaking of schedules, look for solid teams to be more willing to play us after we graduate 6 players that are all experienced and in our rotation. Even so, if MM and LS stay on for still another Season and our recruiting class when finished ends up glittering like never before, watch out because these Shocks will still prevail and we won't plan on having a delay of a few Seasons to do so.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

They already played one against Omaha, so I'm guessing they are out.

Seeing as we have a closed scrimmage on Saturday (I believe) and an exhibition game the following Saturday, and then the real thing starting the following Friday, I don't know how we are going to get a special exhibition added.

It has the potential to get out of control. I already wonder who paid for Self's steak dinner in KC yesterday. Maybe they'll start televising these and giving the ad revenue to charity. We all know which schools are going to be included in the future "Whatever-a-thons."

Iowa and Iowa State might just start offering Drake and UNI exhibition games instead of real games during the season to continue alleviating pressure from legislators.

It gives an extra prep game to the teams who can actually get a game scheduled.

                        • "Cincinnati Bearcats 2017-18 Basketball Team Preview and Prediction" - By Athlon Sports

                          "...Final Analysis

The Bearcats are expected to challenge for the AAC championship, although the presence of Wichita State, which joins the league this season, will make it more difficult. This is the most balanced offensive team Cronin has had at Cincinnati. The key will be the Bearcats’ ability to progress offensively while also maintaining the trademark defensive prowess that has been a hallmark of the Cronin era.

Despite the program’s impressive run of seven straight NCAA Tournaments — one of only eight schools that can claim that level of consistent success — Cincinnati has reached the Sweet 16 only once during that span. Bearcat fans will be expecting this team to reach the second weekend — at least — of the NCAA Tournament."

"Basketball season is quickly approaching, so this week’s “What If Wednesday” is focusing on what it would take for Baylor’s Men’s Basketball team to make it out of their non-conference schedule undefeated for the second year in a row. This will also act as a primer for the basketball schedule for those who haven’t looked ahead to it much yet. For the sake of space, a lot of the “easy win” opponents will be listed with little analysis...

                              ...vs. Wichita State:
Wichita State rounds of an extremely difficult stretch of non-conference games, and is likely the most difficult of the bunch. They are the #4 KenPom team in the preseason. This system predicts Wichita State to beat Baylor 72-71. So needless to say, this could be a very close, very competitive game. Wichita State returns a lot of talent, headlined by Landry Shamet, who shot 44% from the 3 point line last year. Solid guard play from Manu Lecomte and Jake Lindsey will be absolutely critical. If the Bears make it past this point in the non-conference undefeated, I expect them to glide the rest of the way to conference play...."
