On the coaches show HCGM mentioned there is no real metric for defense in basketball like the WAR rating in baseball. I know some of you on here are complete basketball stat geeks, so I'll toss an idea out. There is the +- rating for your own team when a player is in, why not a similar rating for the effectiveness of the other team? Since the whole point is to prevent scoring, could it be based on points per possession or something like that? How challenging would that be to compute?

Oh, and I hope the guys take the snubs in the awards with offense, get a little chippy, and LEAVE NO DOUBT.

Sports reference keeps a Drtg in the "per 100" stats, this would be like kenpom a Ortg. They also have defensive win shares in the "advanced" stats which would be like WAR.

I have never been a person who really cares about awards....and yes I've gotten some for various things...so hit delete on the sour grapes posts. I have always found any award is rarely examined without bias etc. The beauty of basketball is the person with the most points wins. This isn't gymnastics, diving, the Oscars or any other activity that is judged. Just go 3-0 in St. Louis, take home the only trophy that matters, and walk out like an assassin. If you play, work, volunteer, or anything else for personal accolades, you are missing the point of life. Go Shocks! Put your name on that trophy...the name across the front of your jersey.

Come on, Stickboy, you're better than that: "Saluki board is upset"? There are a few homers over there saying that, and a few other rational voices stepping in. Don't create drama where none exists, eh? :)

My only objection to the voting--speaking as a Saluki fan--is that Thik Bol didn't make the All-Newcomer team (as your writer voted him to be on). Other than that, I have no problem, especially since it's stupid anyway.

One cool thing the WSU writer said that I agree with: he doesn't like his vote having any say over a bonus or contract extension.

Also remember how insane Tekele was when he didn't get DPOY? Brown knows what to do.

Also if I'm Brown and I know I play for the best defensive team and I know my coach is one of the best defensive coaches ever and he tells me I'm the best defender then that's all I need.

I hope they are mad about the defensive snub. They still have plenty of room to improve and defense will take this team as far as they want to go.
