OSU athletics have been getting some huge donations as of late (Boone Pickens gave $165 MILLION at the end of '06), so it wouldn't surprise me if they threw some big money at a prospect.

The hedge fund is actually worth quite a bit more than that now. T Boone actually got another 80+ big time boosters to take variable life policies out of about $30 thousand each, assigning OSU athletics as the beneficiaries so that the policies payable upon death would donate another $2-3 millon right off the bat... not to mention the money that those policies will make.
It will be interesting to see if money talks....

Come up short and your still hungry and the best shot you have is to stay in Larry-town.
I know Self has said he loves Lawrence and they seem to love him as well."Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should accomplish with your ability."

Just watched the OSU press conference. I honestly don’t think that they have approached anyone yet. They seem to be really far behind. The AD did an okay job, but I think he will catch a ton of heat for giving the impression that he (quote) "did not keep a list of coaches he admired, did not know whether they will form a search committee, had not spoken to a single person about anything related to the position, did not have any idea how long it would take, had never done this before, needs coaching on how to conduct a search," etc. People might say he said those things out of respect for Sean Sutton, but it came off like he took a long time to decide and now finds himself without a plan. Problem is, this is their 3rd straight loss in the opening round of the NIT….maybe he was going to wait and see what happened, but he didn’t need to wait to have a plan in case it did.Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. Self is staying. First, the job would be a step down. There are only a handful of programs that are considered the Elite of college basketball. KU, UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, Indiana, Wichita St. (ahem). OK State isn't one of them. KU will give the guy a raise, it won't come close to what Boone will offer, but KU Basketball in itself is offers much more intangibles than OSU on top of the million plus Self is already getting.
Self has already mentioned that KU was his dream job I doubt the guy bolts. But as they say, money talks so I give it a 1 percent chance he leaves.

I heard Gotlieb talking about how the AD at Okie State is probably way in over his head, but got the job because he's buddies with TBoone. Sounds like this press conference did nothing to move opinions the other direction.

Why not?
What the heck -- why not take a shot at Self?
It seems unlikely, and Self may say he loves Lawrence, but he is an Okie, and $4 million a year (if that's what Pickens wants to put up for however many years it takes) is $4 million a year. Some people do keep score that way, although Self doesn't strike me as one of them.
Still, if you really don't have a clue where to turn, why not aim high? The Alabama football program aimed high, and their $4 million a year got them Nick Saban (not that OSU basketball and Alabama football are even remotely comparable in stature, granted -- even KU basketball is a step down from Alabama football in terms of overall history and tradition, so where does that leave Oklahoma State? -- but you never know until you ask).

Possible scenario: You are from OSU, your wife is from OSU. They are never, ever going to name the gym after you in Lawrence, no matter how many national championship banners you may hang.
One of the primary distinguishing characteristics of an "elite" program is the amount and availability of resources. If Mr. Pickens wants OSU at an "elite" level, he has the money for the facilities and the coach.
Now to bring it full circle, perhaps Mr. Self is interested in not only winning, but having an enduring legacy. Self Court located in Pickens Arena would be more than he could ever get at Lawrence.
That and the enormous pile of cash :)

I don't think that they are changing it from Gallaher Iba Arena for one...but the court is named after Eddie Sutton already...so I am not so sure they jump to change. It would be a while.
