Eagle, as watcher pointed out, my comment was directed at those amongst us who were critical of Jans. I, for one, and I don't think I'm in the minority, was appreciative of the fact that Marshall was willing to bring Coach Jans back into the WSU fold. As you pointed out, he's most definitely paid for actions and I'm sure is forever humbled by the experience.

I wanted to point out that his invisible hand has been at work this season and I'm pretty sure the team's success is due, in no small part, to the addition of Coach Jans' keen BB IQ.

My bad I missed the sarcasm. I agree 100 percent with the above statement.

      • I was unable to watch the game live but did watch the repaly last night.

My player of the game choice is Rob Kampman. He scored a good number of points, he made a bunch of assists and had very few if any turnovers. He didn't have many rebounds but there were very few missed shots that required rebounding.

If that was Rob's 1st time in that role his performance was more than impressive.

Mark Adams, Dave Dahl and Bob Hull might want to check their review mirrors. The object they see is closer tthan it appears.

I think you're right with the fact that he's been scouted now by the MVC. Willis was great during almost all of the non-con. This makes me hopeful that maybe once we hit the NCAA tournament (hopefully), that he will turn it back on and start dominating again. Or it could also be the fact that Shaq finally got it in gear after a sluggish start and Nurger has also been great. We might have ourselves a 3 headed monster down low once again.

          • ever since their setback at cell block no. 5 (aka normal) nine games ago, the shockers have looked just as good or maybe even better than last years team... they are actually pretty close defensively and better offensively.

            really rounding into shape, now.

That's like we get beat in the national title game by Gonzaga (b/c if we're the bad guy there ain't no Rocky in the MVC). I would take that ending this year.

Agree, that was the change I was referring to, not personnel. Worked well other than the bull charge to the hoop that was getting rewarded with a foul call.

Conner's improvement on defense has been phenomenal especially considering his lost first 1.5 years.

I remember Coach saying something that fit with that in a recent radio show. He was talking about Conner's recent development, and said that, last year, he was playing behind Ron and Fred, and had deferred to them. Then he said something like his prior year and a half hadn't really contributed to his development as a player. I thought "it's different when you have really good coaches who know how to coach fundamentals."

                        • I was browsing SIU's generally entertaining message boards and one of their fans had posted a comment about SIU's declining enrollment.

So I looked into that a bit further. SIU's peak enrollment was in 1991 at 24,869. It has been declining steadily ever since that time and this Spring SIU weighed in with enrollment of 14,636. They were still around 20,000 students in 2011.

I am not sure what the reasons for this are but enorllment levels are at their lowest level since the early 1960's. I think student enrollment at WSU at that time was around 7,000. Not sure what the peak enrollment has been at WSU and when that occurred.

Apparently, men's basketball is not the only thing in decline at SIU. Declining enrollment is not something affecting only SIU but for some reason it seems to have hit them harder than most. But perhaps not I don't know for sure.

I suppose declining enrollment is impacting many universities.

With tuition at four year colleges getting as it is now, I think more students are really considering whether or not their potential career field requires a four year college education. I know at the high school where I teach we are trying to get students to be more thoughtful about what their career aspirations are, what it takes to get there, and to realize that there are many terrific and decent paying career fields that do not require four years of college. I am glad WSU has pursued the merger with WATC, because not only is it a win-win for both institutions in my opinion, it will help give more legitimacy to the validity of a shorter term technical degree or certificate. The days of working about 10 hours a week at minimum wage and having that be about a semester's tuition are long gone, but that is what I managed on in the late 80s. I actually worked about 25 hours a week to also cover my living expenses, and I did have a bit of music scholarship to help as well. But I was in the era of 15 credit hours costing about $750, not the $3000+ it is now.

Wow! That's a big drop. It would be interesting how other Valley schools are fairing, the AAC schools and Big 12, private vs public. Are there trends in enrollment from one type/level of university to another? How will these trends, if they exist, effect universities' athletic programs? Is having, or dropping football, a catch 22 for universities with lowering enrollment? A damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. All of course in it's own thread.
