  • Postgame Breakdown - Augusta (Exhibition 11/2/16)

    Shooting from the hip...

    1. I'm extremely intrigued by the possibility of a Landry/Austin combo at the 1-2, the 2-3, and in late game situations for the next 4 years. Ron was a magnificent two guard but I never thought he could really drive/draw/dish, and both these guys appear to have that skill.

    2. I'm even more intrigued by the possibility of those guys squaring off against each other in practice every day for 4 years and making each other better. Coach repeatedly talked about how he could see Malcolm Armstead's toughness filter into Fred.

    3. I'll have to agree to disagree with some of our esteemed posters, but Conner's not a point guard for the level at which we want to run this program. And I mean nominally, not relative to Fred. Wonderful 2 guard and I hope/expect him to have a great career... just not at the point. I just don't see the creation that Clevin, Joe, Malcolm, and Fred set as a standard; maybe he can get there but I don't see it yet like I did at the early stages with those guys. And what we do know for a fact is that Gregg Marshall demands defense, toughness, rebounding, and a pure point guard.

    4. I really like the fact that Reaves seemed to be in the primary rotation. When I saw him up close in Montreal I was convinced that he was too thin to weather the grind of D1 and that a redshirt year would help that... but I will give a fist pump the first time I see him check in to a regular season game.

    5. I wish Shaq wanted to be the heart and soul of this team as much as Duff does... but I'll definitely settle for Duff.

    6. Duff gets sped up a lot, but not as much as last year. I'm glad to see the weight gain and the passion maintained.

    7. I described Eric Hamilton as a controlled explosion last year and I will continue to do so. People forget exactly how important Kadeem and Chadrack were to our successes with rim protection and the mass to match up with the larger bodies at elite programs in the tournament - Eric can do that, and is significantly more offensively talented on the perimeter.

    8. We'll see what Shaq brings to the table when he's playing against D1 sizes. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I watched DeJuan Blair make a very nice living (and contribution to the Spurs' success) for several years, and there's not a doubt in my mind that Shaq is physically superior to him and has a higher ceiling. Find that extra gear, big fella!!!

    9. Sherrill for Augusta has secured my all-time #3 spot on the "I don't give a ****, I'm shooting the lights out in the Roundhouse" award. 2nd place is Andrew Goudelock because it was just one game. 1st place is Hersey Hawkins.

    10. Bottom line - it's gonna be a good year with lots of learning and potential.

Charles Dickens talked about the 'best of times' as seen in the 1st half. Then he mentioned the worst of times as seen when #10 for the Jags who was quiet the 1st half suddenly could not miss on his roll in the 2nd half.. This will be a Season where 3G will work overtime to help our squad grow but there will be plenty of ups and downs. Even so, we are talented enough and athletic enough that by the end of the Season, we will be tough as nails.

For me, Reaves has potential. He looked like a freshman. Same goes for Keyser. Shamet (our other freshman), OTOH, looked great! He's some combination of a more athletic Toure Murry and Ron Baker.

I thought Frankamp looked like a very good point guard! He did everything I wanted to see, including a few attempts to get Shaq the ball that ended up being turn overs. He forced it a bit and that's good for him. Is he Fred or Malcolm? Nope. Is he Joe or Clevin? Maybe.

Hamilton had a great first half. He can really score!

Shaq was a monster! All hail Shaq!

Let's get McDuffie, Kelly, and Brown going and bring Smith and Willis up to speed!

      Need more from Rauno.

I don't care who, but LS, CF, AR, ZB, MM or CJK needs to drive to the rim.

LS, CF, and AR did some, but not quite enough.

If said it once and I will repeat. Having Landry and Austin for 4 years here will be a treat because they are players!!!!!!!. CJ also had some nice passes. MM and Brown were off today but this will be rare. 3G said Willis and Hamilton fought for the same ball so he had to take them out. Even so, Willis will be very solid. I liked the way Hamilton went to the rack 15'-20' away and drove in and finished. Coach also gave Nurger lots of minutes today and it appears he will be ready to go.

He also had RN in at crunch time. What does that tell you?

I'm not an esteemed poster but I disagree with this bullet point. Granted I've been on the Frankamp bandwagon for a while so it's possible I'm biased but I thought the team ran the smoothest and looked the best with him at the point. Kennedy, Dahl, and Marshall had a lot of positive things to say about his calming presence down the stretch of that game.

Obviously it's an exhibition game, against a surprisingly good but still low level opponent, so I'm not taking a victory lap or anything but I was pleasantly surprised by what he showed. He played solid D, tipped or stole several balls, grabbed his share of rebounds, hit shots, dished a few assists (could have been more), and limited turnovers (which we know he can do) but was also more aggressive. He penetrated more which created some open looks for his teammates and he just shares the ball in general. I really liked the way we passed today. Very unselfishly just kept it moving, looking for the best shot. That starts with Frankamp, Shamet, Reaves, Smith, etc.

Not to mention when we needed a bucket for some breathing room he knocked down a big jumper. Gotta make that 1 & 1 but I'm confident with him going to he line late.

Again, it's an exhibition game against Augusta so there's still plenty that can happen. I just don't understand how this game backs up the idea that he can't be the point guard this year.

Yep. Too much north and south going on.

^And that's not to say the other guys looked bad. Smith and Reaves both had their moments.

I too think that Good News is wrong. Conner was our best point guard this afternoon. He isn't a Fred but he handled the ball well, made some nice passes (several ended up in turnovers or missed layups), and showed leadership at the end of the game. We will see what happens next Friday. Im not sure if he will be the type of point guard to take the ball to the rim. He most likely will pull up and shoot a short shot or pass to an open man.

Did I hear HCGM say that Shaq was recovering from a concussion?

Our starting lineup to start the game made my pea brain ponder. However, the lineup of the 2nd half of 1. CF 2. Shamet 3. MM 4. Kelly 5. Shaq could be common. However, I like the quality depth of this team and everybody will get their chances to start and or finish games and get more minutes when performing well in various matchups we will face.

Miss missed the starting lineup because of the technical difficulties. Would somebody fill me in?
