Shooting from the hip...
1. I'm extremely intrigued by the possibility of a Landry/Austin combo at the 1-2, the 2-3, and in late game situations for the next 4 years. Ron was a magnificent two guard but I never thought he could really drive/draw/dish, and both these guys appear to have that skill.
2. I'm even more intrigued by the possibility of those guys squaring off against each other in practice every day for 4 years and making each other better. Coach repeatedly talked about how he could see Malcolm Armstead's toughness filter into Fred.
3. I'll have to agree to disagree with some of our esteemed posters, but Conner's not a point guard for the level at which we want to run this program. And I mean nominally, not relative to Fred. Wonderful 2 guard and I hope/expect him to have a great career... just not at the point. I just don't see the creation that Clevin, Joe, Malcolm, and Fred set as a standard; maybe he can get there but I don't see it yet like I did at the early stages with those guys. And what we do know for a fact is that Gregg Marshall demands defense, toughness, rebounding, and a pure point guard.
4. I really like the fact that Reaves seemed to be in the primary rotation. When I saw him up close in Montreal I was convinced that he was too thin to weather the grind of D1 and that a redshirt year would help that... but I will give a fist pump the first time I see him check in to a regular season game.
5. I wish Shaq wanted to be the heart and soul of this team as much as Duff does... but I'll definitely settle for Duff.
6. Duff gets sped up a lot, but not as much as last year. I'm glad to see the weight gain and the passion maintained.
7. I described Eric Hamilton as a controlled explosion last year and I will continue to do so. People forget exactly how important Kadeem and Chadrack were to our successes with rim protection and the mass to match up with the larger bodies at elite programs in the tournament - Eric can do that, and is significantly more offensively talented on the perimeter.
8. We'll see what Shaq brings to the table when he's playing against D1 sizes. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I watched DeJuan Blair make a very nice living (and contribution to the Spurs' success) for several years, and there's not a doubt in my mind that Shaq is physically superior to him and has a higher ceiling. Find that extra gear, big fella!!!
9. Sherrill for Augusta has secured my all-time #3 spot on the "I don't give a ****, I'm shooting the lights out in the Roundhouse" award. 2nd place is Andrew Goudelock because it was just one game. 1st place is Hersey Hawkins.
10. Bottom line - it's gonna be a good year with lots of learning and potential.
