Breaking in is the hard part. Once you are in, you are more likely to move up in ballot. Getting in requires people to pick from a bucket of teams for the last few spots.

For context, he has SMU and Notre Dame ahead of us, and Xavier, Butler and Creighton
right behind, with Maryland the odd man out

That does not surprise me as Notre Dame had two wins this week (Wake Forest and #14-Florida State), even though both were at home.

Rats. Our point total increased from 38 to 87, which is more or less in line with expectations.

We will just have to keep winning to break in.

Nd's Next 4 games are @Boston College, @NC State, vs Georgia Tech, vs BC. They probably wont be going anywhere in the next couple of weeks.

Butler has home vs Depaul and Saint Johns this week before playing @Nova and @Xavier. So they are good for this week probably

Maryland has @Northwestern (net zero game for us), and @Wisconsin then Home vs Minn Iowa the next week. So probably only movement would be up unless they lose both games this week.

Saint Marys will probably win out now.

South Carolina has 3 or 4 lose-able games in the next 2 weeks. vs Ark, @Van, @FLA, vs Tenn

Creighton has @Seton Hall, VS Georgetown, vs Providence, @Nova. I said they go 2-2 or 3-1 out of those.

Just asking... how many ranked teams have been left out of the NCAA tournament, if ever?

The last team I remember was SMU I think just a few years ago. They were around 23 or 24 and got sent to the NIT. It might have been 2013 or 2014

They beat #14 FSU at home. They weren't that far behind us, in fact, they might have been directly behind us. It was gonna happen.
