Wait, what?! What about those losses aren't "quality losses?"

FWIW, the Shockers received two votes in the coaches poll. There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

If we don't lose again in non-conference, which would include getting wins over OU, OSU and Colorado State, we will be back on the edge of a ranking. That would make us about 10-2 with two very respectable losses. It could be enough to finish December ranked #25. After that, you've gotta go 16-2 or better in this year's MVC to stay ranked. I would think 14-4 in the MVC could keep you inside the top 50 and at least in consideration for an at-large.
But if we go 1-2 against OU, OSU and CSU, we are pretty much gonna have to win Arch Madness to make the dance and I bet it would take an undefeated MVC run to get back to #25 by the end of February. I don't see that with this team. I think we may need to plan to take a year off of sniffing the rankings. You can still make noise from the #40 spot, though, and this team has the talent.

At some point you have to wonder whether we'd be better off as an independent than as a member of the Valley. We pretty much have to go undefeated through non-conference play to feel safe, and it is entirely because the MVC is not a good conference, and looks unlikely to improve. The MVC is going to consistently give us 2-3 games against the Top 50 and 14-18 games against 100+ RPI teams. Every game we play against Drake level opponents actively hurts our chances to make the NCAA tournament. In a conference we have an auto-bid, but we have never got a bid we wouldn't have already gotten.
This is an NCAA quality team trapped in a CIT level conference. It is not fun to win this conference 16-2 every year and still struggle to make the NCAA tournament. It isn't exciting to be a top 10-25 team year-in and year-out and get stuck in outside the rankings all year because the Valley struggles to put up even 2 other competent teams. And it flat out sucks to be a play-in team better than half the at-large teams.
The sad reality is that the MVC is ****, and will be ****. The only question is whether or not we want to keep getting our hands dirty. So far, it hasn't truly cost us, but the instant we go to the NIT because the MVC added 40-50 spots to our RPI we need to consider packing our bags.

Shockers were my #23 team in the country as of this morning. They are currently 44th in offensive efficiency and 15th in defensive efficiency.

Someone needs to get their head out their ass ^^^
