You're right that a lot of people online act like it's between Heslip and FVV. I just don't buy. Heslip hadn't even played in a preseason game to this point. Even though he can shoot the ball, I think the Raptors staff must not be impressed with his defense or work ethic or who knows what. His biggest advantage is that he's from Canada.

FVV got the start against Chris Paul. I don't think the Raptors staff thought he'd lead the team to a big lead. He played well enough that he's still in a good place to get the 15th spot.

I saw a quote from Terrence Ross where he was asked which rookie was the most impressive, and he said something along the lines of "Fred is ballin'!"

Also keep in mind that Heslip was in the game for the mop up minutes against the Clips bottom five, when both teams cleared their bench about halfway through the fourth quarter. Huge dropoff in competition level at that point in time. FVV didn't have his best game, but was still not bad against one of the game's elite.

Interesting how opinions can change after seeing him in person for a few months. It's also interesting to see what they got right.

I don’t know whether Fred has even a puncher’s chance to make the big club out of camp.

The Raptors are willing to consider players who don’t necessarily check every box on a scout’s form sheet, but demonstrate an uncanny ability to actually play the game.
