  • Fred will still have to make the roster out of camp, but the whole multi-year part makes me think the Raptors will be keeping him around.

Smells like they may be looking to trade a PG.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

    • Fred is shooting 42.9% and 5-7 from three. Only 1-7 inside the arc, though. 13 rebounds, 5 assists, two turnovers and only one steal in 47 minutes.

I wonder why this contract came about so quickly after Summer league started? My guess is that they wanted to see him live against better athletes than they had seen in tapes. That's my only guess. Can he guard and keep up with NBA speed? That was quickly answered. How else do you ink someone after just 2 or 3 games when there is 4 years of college tape to see? They already knew he was an absolute college stud.

I can answer this question, but you wouldn't like the answer. It would have something to do with playing against MVC guards doesn't gain any respect from NBA guys.

          That's the polite answer.

The less digestible one is the one we hear over and over. He didn't actually play anybody, so all his stats and accolades don't really count.

My answer is that one cannot not truly appreciate Fred VanVleet from watching highlight films or even game films. His excellence becomes observable during the practices, team meetings, sitting next to the coach on the bench and, most importantly, after becoming "soulmates" with is teammates. Fred has shot 1-7 inside the arc -- I'm guessing mostly on drives to the hoop -- but will become more effective when his teammates expect what he is going to do and provide screens/interference for him, or make themselves more available for the dish/assist. Court and team awareness is difficult to understand by watching tape.

Maybe, but if they've done their job, they've watched him dominate Yogi, play even with Jerian Grant, and with the Harrison twins. The only unknown was this year with his year long injury against Angel (Miami)Rodriguez. His injury was why I thought some of our fans were unfair to him with some of the criticism at the end of the year. He just wasn't the Fred we knew with his injury this entire year.

From what I'm hearing, other teams have shown interest, so they signed him to a partially guaranteed contract to hold his rights... if he gets cut from camp, he would have to clear waivers, and then would become a "free agent" again. Their hope is that if this happens, he will sign a D-league contract and play under that since he will have gotten his guaranteed money when he was cut...

His agent was negotiating a contract with them since before the draft.

Could be way off base, but I think coming into the Minnesota game and killing Kris Dunn's momentum (even while being called for two phantom fouls) had a lot to do with it.

I think @shock: is right about this. From what I've read, this deal has basically been in the works since the draft and the timing of it's release has nothing to do with Fred's summer league performance, but just reflects the time it takes to negotiate the details. In fact, if the deal was contingent on summer league performance, it is highly unlikely that we would have seen it yet because deals don't happen that quickly.

I certainly don't disagree about the deal being in the works, but I wouldn't be surprised if the summer league performance helped get it completed, specially if there really were other teams showing an interest.

Again, I've not been a close watcher of the going ons in the NBA previously, so could be way off base.

It was agreed with in principal before SL play even started. There are many things to hash out in a contract and even though it's a relatively small contract, Fred must have a good agent because-
                              A. the things that take two weeks to negotiate are the things like how much gets paid when and bonuses.

                              B. He had higher profile clients and once Fred's deal was agreed to he started on other contracts and just now came back around to finalize everything.

I knew they were in negotiations as soon as the draft was over. I didn't know that the deal was already done before the SL started. You must have better sources than I do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
