  • "Knee-Jerk Reactions to the Start of the 2016-17 NCAA Basketball Season" - Bleacher Report

By Kerry Miller, College Basketball National Analyst
    Nov 16, 2016

The 2016-17 college basketball season has only just begun, but we've seen enough to throw preseason projections into the trash in favor of slightly outlandish, knee-jerk reactions...

No Ron Baker. No Fred VanVleet. No Problem.

"Knee-Jerk Reaction: Wichita State's Gregg Marshall is going to get quite a few votes for National Coach of the Year.

Between the 2013 Final Four and the 35-0 start to the following season, we came to know and love the Wichita State Shockers. Cleanthony Early was the star for a couple of years, followed by the reign of Fred VanVleet, Ron Baker, Tekele Cotton, Darius Carter and Evan Wessel. It felt like those guys were there forever. But now they're all gone, replaced by names and faces that are about as anonymous to the general college basketball public as the backup point guard for Prairie View A&M.

Yet, Wichita State continues kicking butt and taking names just like any other year...."

    • ^ I got excited and then the next bullet point was "Crayton is final four good". Obviously this writer suffers from some deficiencies.

Before they're "final four good" they should probably just try being sweet sixteen good for once.

As of right now WSU is #20 in kenpom, and Creighton sits at #33. So I guess by extension WSU is national championship good?

I think this report is closer to the truth than "Yeah, but we don't know how good they really are..." sort of reporting we tend to get even locally.

And I hope GGG saw that W. Virginia lite reference. That'd make them an easy second round opponent.

That had me scratching my head. WSU defense isn't a lite version of anyone.

              • Post game write up on the dismantling of Tulsa, and also some high praise for Marshall so far this season.

                • Sorry to throw some ice water on all the cake frosting here but I'm reserving full judgment on this team until we actually play someone. While they have blown out all opponents so far (which is very entertaining), there have been glaring mistakes which I am absolutely certain Marshall will fix. We have great talent and potential, but a lot of newcomers. Still looking forward to this season. We will know a great deal more about this team by the end of next week.

Pretty much every team I've watched has plenty of glaring mistakes.

Not an unwise stance to take although I am pleasantly surprised and very positive about what the Shockers have shown us so far. But, yeah, B4A, will provide the measuring stick needed to get a better sense for exactly what kind of tiger we may have by the tail with this team.

However, I am kind of glad the schedule set up this way. These first 4 games are giving 3G a great opportunity to work his newcomers into the mix and get them some valuable confidence building court time. From what I can see these guys are taking excellent advantage of these opportunities.

                          November 17, 2016

The mid-major NCAA basketball conferences are again packed with talent unknown to most of America. What sleepers could be lurking this year?

                          "MVC Favorite: Wichita State Shockers

The Missouri Valley will be competitive as always, but I fully expect WSU to take the crown again. Despite losing perennial stars Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, head coach Gregg Marshall still has plenty of talent to stay ahead in the conference. Markis McDuffie is the leading returning scorer at 7.4 points. The 6’8″ sophomore looks like the Shockers’ next great player. Kansas transfer Conner Frankamp might be ready to handle the point guard position and Landry Shamet could be huge. Overall, Wichita State has a number of guys ready to take the next step and win another conference title...."

In case no one noticed, the very next page in the online article discusses the MEAC. Our first opponent, South Carolina State, was picked by the writer to win the MEAC. Since we boatraced them, perhaps this may be a sign of how good the team really is.

Or of how bad the MEAC is.

Yep. The highest rated MEAC team in KenPom is North Carolina Central at 259. It's an awful league. South Carolina State is 319.
