  • With our schedule and our wins I'd say we are a long way from being "solidly" in right now. The committee usually snubs schedules like ours. The one thing we have going for us is that the bubble sucks. If I didn't know the committee usually hoses the mids, I would feel more comfortable, but I think our schedule just gives them an excuse to leave us out. Also, Gonzaga being placed as the 4th #1 indicates strongly that this committee is going to be very P5 biased. Fortunately, we still get to decide our own fate before we have to put our faith in the committee.

Not just with us, there is a strong trend of the Monmouths, etc. being snubbed. The trend has been moving more and more to only extending invites to the P5. Nothing indicates to me that that will change this year or with this committee.

        TTL BS IMHO
Not at all -- no more than being in the top four of the CFP ratings once they start coming out gives a team leeway to lose. Stumble on the gridiron, and you're likely to be in deep doo-doo very quickly. Basketball teams get more leeway because there are more games and losses to be had, but they still need to keep impressing people. You can only get away with so many quality losses.

        • I can't help but think that they purposefully did not put all the correct teams in the top 16 spots. Controversy makes good ratings. Or so they think.

What I would be interested in is an honest assessment of bubble teams and who is the last 8 teams in and next 8 out. Now that is a show I would watch.....
Marge: The plant called and said that if you don't come in tomorrow, don't bother coming in Monday.
          Homer: WOOHOO! Four day weekend.

I understand that, and I agree to an extent, but we're talking about generalities here. Look at the teams. Count the at large teams clearly ahead of WSU. Yes, you have to assume P5 conferences will have autobids to their top teams, but tell me 36 teams ahead of WSU right now.

(UNC) Virginia, Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, Florida State. (Kansas) Baylor, West Virginia, Iowa State, Kansas State (generous), Oklahoma State. (Villanova) Creighton, Xavier, Butler. (Wisconsin) Maryland, Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan State. (Arizona) Oregon, UCLA, Cal, USC, Utah. (Florida) Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas. (Gonzaga) St. Mary's.

(Cincinnati) SMU? (VCU) Dayton (UNC-Wilmington) (Middle Tennessee) (Valparaiso) (Monmouth) (Akron) (Belmont)

What am I missing? Who is not on that list that is in ahead of WSU? Even if ALL of the non multiple bid conferences have upsets, and you think Cincinnati, SMU, VCU, Dayton, UNC-W, MTSU, Akron & Belmont ALL get in ahead of WSU that's only 37 teams and we're the first 2 out.

And only Cincinnati is clearly ahead of WSU.

            • We have 1 quality win against a team that may not even be in the tourney. IMO we aren't even close to being solidly in. As of right now, 21 of our 22 wins have come against teams ranked 100+ in the RPI. 17 of those against teams 150+ (UNI and LSU are close to calling into this category). I feel at this point if we loose to anyone other than ISUr in the MVC championship we are out. A loss to ISUr would place us squarely on the bubble.

              • Right now, I more involved with what happens today at Loyola. If we win this game and enter the Top 25, our reputation this year will continue to grow. We are playing better basketball right now and today we need to beat a decent, some would say pretty good, basketball team on the road. It will give us a better read on where we are at. We are in the discussion for at large but today we have work to do.

                • Ok, question. Let's say we do make it into the AP Top 25 this week (reasonable possibility), would Palm continue to leave us off of his list of teams he deems "tourney worthy"? Has a top 25 team ever been a first 4 out?

Answer to 1st question is yes because he is an idiot. He had us out last year when we got the invitation.

                    • I believe Air Force was ranked 15-20 range and got left out of the tourney. Not sure of the year, I think somewhere between 1995-2000.

EDIT: Utah State(24-3) in 2004. I was way off base. That's what I get trying to use my fading memory.....

A few years ago La Tech appeared in the rankings only to lose in their conference tourney and wasn't really even close to the at large discussion. Essentially, the rankings mean jack crap in terms of the NCAA tourney. Now, if we were able to move up high enough they couldn't just easily bump us off the rankings if we don't win in St. Louis, who knows, maybe being ranked come Selection Sunday weekend could help our case.

                        • It appears quality wins, RPI, and SOS are the 3 categories that mean most to the committee.

I would argue that quality losses would be 4th, perhaps higher.

                              • I say it every year, but I'd rather be an 11 or 12 seed, then a 7-10. Avoid the top 2 seeds as long as possible. As an 11 seed you'd 6 seed in the first round, then more than likely a 3 in the second round, whereas with a 8 seed you get a 9 seed in the first round, then a 1. I'd personally prefer the 11 seed route.
