Keep in mind that he is a young sophomore and the fact that he was probally only at 85 to 90 percent all season coming off his meniscus surgery earlier in the year. I can see easily averaging 15 or more per game with 10+ rebound average next year. I'm guessing he will put on another 15 pounds minimum and could still grow another inch or two.
He needs to be fed cheeseburgers while doing squats. Him and Shamet are AA quality

    • McDuffie needs to work on nothing but ball handling and footwork drills for the next six months.

Edit: When he's not eating cheeseburgers and doing squats.

I don't wanna see that man handle a ball again until he looks like Kyrie freaking Irving out there. Mcduffie could be a HUGE presence on the floor if we could trust him to bring the ball up the floor and be a playmaker. As of now, he gets his points off of difficult pull up jumpers and battling for offensive boards. If he could learn to create space for himself or drive strong and confident to the basket, we have a Cle 2.0 on our hands. He has so much potential that will be limited until he can be trusted with the ball in his hands.

I'm editing this. Feed him cheeseburgers while he does squats and dribbles two basketballs. I don't know how, but if he pulls it off, I'm confident he will improve.

          • I want less finesse and more posterizing dunks. He has the size and skill, just needs the beef and attitude.

Yes. No more finesse. I wanna see this this cat throw it down hard and put the fear of God in the opposing team every time he takes it to the hole. That cheeseburger-squat regimen will have his standing vert so explosive there won't be anymore of him being rejected under the basket. Coach Heiar will probably throw in a tennis ball for good measure.

              • I'm not saying McDuffie had a bad year. He had a pretty solid year. But...

...I'm attributing this year to "Sophomore Slump". I think his potential for this year was higher than his production this year. That happens to some players - and it's definitely not a negative about the player.

i think McDuffie's Jr and Sr years (yes, I think he's a 4-year guy) can be better than Early's. His handles are "close" to what he needs. I think he's struggled a bit with dribbling and making decisions at the same time. Experience will resolve that. I also think he would be more effective as a SF than a PF. If he develops the handles that Shocker fans want to see, he'll probably project as an NBA 2/3 combo.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

                • Interesting projection, Aargh, and it reminds me that Xavier McDaniel ended up as an NBA SF who could shoot outside and played some SG. Yes, X -- a 2/3 (mostly 3) combo.

You're right that he improved this year but I agree that he has a high ceiling. The great players are all flexible and multifaceted. Magic could pass, shoot, post up, rebound, play defense and we have a good number of players with multiple skills including Duff. He actually is playing a lot of 3, even when playing the stretch 4. However, he often guards the 4.

                    • Going to have a hard time buying any kind of "Sophomore Slump" or underachievement comments for the guy that led a program to a 31-5 record (2nd most wins ALL TIME), MVC Conference Championship, MVC Post Season Tournament Championship, Round of 32 in the NCAA and MVC 1st Team member with the most minutes, points, rebounds and steals on that team seem more based in unreal fan expectations than anything else.

Seriously, Markis led this team, one of the top 5 best teams in the history of the program, in minutes, points, rebounds and steals. If you expected more, maybe it's time to be a bit more of a realist and less of a fan. Just maybe.

We ask too much of these kids sometimes.

                      • Markis was great this year and showed tremendous improvement from his freshman year. The thing is that his deficiencies (of which there are few) are blindingly obvious and if he makes the same sort of jump as he did last year the possibilities are endless.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

                          Sophomore slump????

You mean slump because he was just "really good" this year as opposed to "retire his number after his sophomore year".

                          • I think some people probably thought Markis would come out and play like Cle in his Sr. Year. Markis has a really high ceiling but he is still young and developing. 1st Team all league as a Soph, leading the team in points, rebounding, etc., are all incredible feats for a Soph. He will continue to improve but the AA talk is probably a little over the top at this point.

                            • I'm not buying "slump." He just isn't the second coming of Tracy McGrady, yet.

                              • The thing people don't realize is that... He was junior Cle(or slightly better) while only being a sophomore himself. The only difference is Markis didn't use as many possession(we didn't need him to due to depth).
