I am with you, Pigman. I am so bereft thinking about the departure of Fred and Ron, and the fact that they are not still playing in the tournament, that I do not want ANY other sad thoughts entering my limited brain space.

Underwood wouldn't go from one mid-major to another. He is either staying at SFA or taking a job at a P5 school. WSU is a better program than SFA, sure, but without any connections to WSU he would take a P5 job over a missouri valley gig.

In this short vid of the Shocks returning home Saturday night, HCGM seemed to genuinely appreciate where he is. Just saying...

Let's see. SFA pays Underwood 400k. Marshall 3.2 million. What mid major are you talking about.

I don't know how much you can read into the video, but I think the sentiment is the big thing. He loves it here. His family loves it here. He's not looking to leave and would only leave if it were PERFECT. The North Carolina job (assuming no sanctions) would be a perfect job. North Carolina does not rebuild, they reload. He could walk-in day one and compete for a championship. Fortunately the North Carolina job is not open right now. Oklahoma State is not a perfect job, it is a rebuilding job. Gregg Marshall is not going to spend his last 8-10 years coaching rebuilding a new program. Further, Oklahoma State is not the type of program where success is almost a given, like the N. Carolina job is. He could really jeopardize his legacy by going to Oklahoma State and not succeeding.

Also relevant is the cash flow the MBB program produces (and hence has available for budget). SFA MBB revenues are $1.9M; WSU MBB revenues are $6.8M. SFA is a classic mid-major; WSU is a mid-major in name only, and due to its legal dependent - the Missouri Valley Conference.

Haha we aren't paying Underwood 3.3* million dollars. Marshall got paid 3.3 million after 4 consecutive tournament appearances, a final four, and Alabama offering nearly 4 million. Sure he'll get a pay raise, but K-State and Oklahoma State will also pay him handsomely. I hate to say it but we are in a mid-major conference. Perhaps the best mid-major team but you can't ignore what conference we are in.

He also references in some audio clip I heard/saw this weekend that he may never coach Fred and Ron again, unless it is in the NBA sometime. I thought I detected a wry smile, but I quickly gave it no further thought.
"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

I heard Tim Jankovich was being groomed to be a head coach some day.

Exactly, it is the conference that makes you mid-major. Compare our revenues to the P5 schools though, it is lower. But if we moved to a power 5 conference, our revenues would explode! The mid-major title is due to conference affiliation. Our reputation is weightier than a mid-major, we are respected as a major program. But lest we forget what happened on Selection Sunday? We dominated our conference and barely squeaked into the tourney! That is the reality - our conference is a drag on our tournament chances. Coaches see that. Underwood lives that now. I'm not downplaying the strength of WSU's program - I am just simply being realistic that the Missouri Valley is a mid-major conference. And I am the loudest proponent that we have outgrown our conference, but as long as we are in the Missouri Valley, it's going to be hard steal hot coaching commodities from power 5 schools.

Our MBB revenues are middle of the pack to top 1/3rd in the context to the AAC and MWC. I'd make a bet WSU basketball pulls in more cash flow than the bottom 1/4th to 1/3rd of the P5 schools. The data is out there via the Equity in Athletics site, but I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole right now.

Makes me wonder how deep into data analysis the consultants WSU hired to look at the conference question will go. Or is their niche perhaps more behind the scenes politics to help grease the skids for other conferences to consider us.

Just out of curiosity, do you know ballpark estimates for where we'd rank if we replaced our current annual TV deal revenue and current MVC NCAA tourny revenue to what the AAC and MWC would be if we joined and got that cut? I haven't seen what those conferences typically dish out to their members.

I have no idea what the TV deals are for the AAC and MWC are. My guess would be considerably better exposure, but not a massive sum more TV revenue (in the context of athletics budgets).

If the consultants Bardo hired for the WSU athletics evaluation don't drill down deep into college athletics financial metrics, then I would be shocked.
