  • Random Thoughts/Stats after 9 Valley games

After having Morris and Kelly lead the way in scoring last night, it got me thinking about how many different people we have had step up. Teams talk about depth, but I really don't think I've seen a team as deep as this one in a long time.

    Through 9 Valley games:
Seven different players have been either our leading scorer or second leader scorer in a game.

4 of those players are bench players (Kelly, McDuffie, Frankamp, Grady)

2 Starters have yet to be a leading or second leading scorer in a Valley game (Brown, and Wessel)

If you add in the non-conf, you can add 4 additional players that have been our leading or 2nd leading scorer (Brown, Hamilton, Taylor, Shamet). So through 20 games we have had 11 different players be either the leading scorer or 2nd leading scorer.

We also have had 11 different people score in double figures this year. 8 of those have done it during conference play.

    Another one.

Frankamp has played 224 minutes so far. He has THREE turnovers. That's one turnover every 74.667 minutes. The next closest player that has over 200 minutes is Wessel at one every 51.889 minutes.

For comparison Fred has played 423 minutes with 27 TOs (though a lot are charges). That's one every 15.66 Minutes. Ron is at 637 minutes and 35 turnovers so one every 18.2 Minutes.

It is also interesting that our margin of victory indicates that this team is more dominant than the 35-0 team was in conference. This years MVC perhaps a little worse than that year but still this team is very good now.

I was looking over the stats in the paper, and UNLESS I MISREAD THIS(always a possibility) before last night, Evan had played 445 minutes and shot 7 free throws and Eric had played 90 minutes and shot 25...is that even possible???

Evan doesn't drive to basket. Eric does. Evans FTs come off bonus situation fouls on rebounds and loose balls

Evan doesn't drive this year. At all.

8.9% of Evan's shots are at the rim.

            10.1% are 2pt jump shots

            81.0% are 3pt shots.

Decided to look up another particular team to see how they compare.

One Shocker squad in particular through the first 9 Valley games had seven different players as well that were either the leading scorer or second leading scorer in a game:

              Malcolm Armstead
              Cleanthony Early
              Demetric Williams
              Ehimen Orukpe
              Carl Hall
              Nick Wiggins
              Jake White

A few notable players, some of you may have heard of would also go on to be added to this list later in the season. Such names as Ron Baker, Fred VanVleet and Tekele Cotton

If you hadn't guessed it by now, it's the Final Four team. This same team was also the same team that last lost three games in a row.

What did Marshall say on one of his coaches shows? Something about history has a tendency to repeat itself?

If SIU can handle Evansville at home tonight they will be right on the Shocker's heels at 8-1.

However, SIU still has to travel to Northern Iowa, Wichita State, Indiana State, Evansville and Illinois State. They host Loyola, Drake, Bradley & Missouri State.

The Shocks travel to Evansville, Illinois State, Drake, Indiana State and Loyola. The Shocks host Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Missouri State and Illinois State.

The common road opponents are Evansville, Illinois State and Indiana State. On top of that SIU has WSU and UNI on the road while the Shocks have Drake and Loyola.

Upcoming Shocker games at Evansville and home against SIU provide an opportunity for separation. Beginning with the Evansville game the Shocks have 4 games in 10 days including 3 road games (Evansville, Illinois State and Drake). This is where the improving depth of the Shockers can come in very handy. That depth is one thing that sets the Shocks apart from the rest of the Valley.

As Fred says, these guys are in the way of what we want to achieve.

I really wish we would start developing Eric Hamilton earlier in games.

I have a Coldblooded type man crush on EH. I am anxious to see how he develops over the next 3.5 years. However, his stats may be a little skewed because he plays (at least partially) against our opponents scrubs.

I really don't think its "against the scrubs" of the other team as much as its their prime players with their will already broken.

I think that EH (himself) is who he is competing against. He needs to understand where he is supposed to be on both offense and how to help on defense. He is still thinking mentally too much.

Yep. He is a monster talent. Hamilton will earn his PT once he understands his role. Junior year Eric Hamilton might be an AA candidate along side Shamet and McDuffie.
