I think we will see more time outs used. Ron will play 38 minutes per game, and he can't do that without a breather or two.

Coach has also varied his time out calling in the NCAA Tournament to not let the game get away. He does not consider this a place to learn. Tulsa may be a game that was a learning laboratory.

I am not sure that HCGM was keeping up during the Tulsa game. He missed the need for a time out, missed offense for defense subs he was clearly intending to use, and didn't notice that Fred was a block of cement on defense until he watched the tape. I am wondering if he has an assistant that feels like they can take control when needed. Jan's always did in those types of games. I witnessed it first hand from the front row during a prior game at Tulsa.

I quoted your reply because I don't buy HCGM's black and white philosophy on time outs. He has used them when he feels like we are the under dog. He refuses to use them when he thinks we have a clear edge. I believe it cost a number of games in prior years. The last couple of years we have been too dominate for it to matter.

You say that he considers us an underdog. I disagree with that. I think that he uses timeouts differently in big Tournament games, when you lose, you are out. He did it in the NIT and in each NCAA games that we played in when we started to lose ground.

He uses time outs during runs in big regular season games against top
opponents. So I believe it is about his assessment of the match up and whether he thinks the team needs his help before the game starts.

Sounds like the raw material for a great question on the next Coach's Show, pro. Just make sure to disguise your voice and have a spy at the venue who can confirm for you that Marshall has his meter on at max detection. Otherwise it may have to wait.

I don't think he has a problem with using timeouts, its just that he feels with Fred and Ron out there for a majority of the time we can wether any situation that comes up. Now with Fred sidelined it might be a little different, but I do know he has said he likes saving them for late game situations, not that he'e against using them in the first half if needed.

For my serious post of the night...

I do think he has a bit of a problem with calling time outs. Even before FVV and Baker became Shockers I noticed that he had a tendency to forego time outs. During his first couple seasons I was pretty peeved that he didn't take advantage of the opportunity to gather his troops and set things up. I came to realize how much this philosophy developed our players. I do think we are at a point where a time out here and there could pay some beneficial dividends, though.

Ah c'mon. Just take Fred's advice on what to do when a big shot is taken. Have some "guts" and let your _______s hang and ask Coach the question.
