  • I would be highly disappointed, quite frankly to the point of being a little pissed if Landry doesn't redshirt. I'm not in practice everyday, nor with the team, so I guess I will trust Marshall's judgment if he thinks Landry can help us win a title, but I have a hard time seeing Landry get more than 5-10 minutes, as Fred and Ron will likely average 35 minutes and Connor will fill in the gaps. Pulling the redshirt would be such a waste of a year, both for Landry and for us, in my outsider opinion.

Is this still even a possibility?

If Landry can help us win now, you win now.

Who knows what the future will bring?

Entirely disagree with this. Completely selfish and short term view. Not right by Landry and certainly not necessarily good for us.

        • If Landry's 10 minutes can be a factor, why not!? You think he's not going to want a shot at a title for 1 more year of who knows what.

And that's why Landry will be the key decision maker -- what someone in our ivory tower thinks is selfish may not be selfish in his mind.

Also, you should consult with Washington Nationals fans whose management decided not to be selfish and have Stephen Strasburg pitch past 150 innings a couple of seasons back, even though shutting him down weakened their rotation for the playoffs (although, as a Cardinals fan, I loved it). That didn't work very well for them, and they haven't had a chance to play for the big prize since, despite being a strong team and a perennial favorite.

There's much to be said for taking your best shot when it's right there in front of you, because you don't know when (or even if) the next comparable opportunity will come.

            • I don't think It's selfish at all to hope he comes back to take a shot at the tourney. In fact, it could be said that it's more selfish to want him to sit, so we can have him for a full five years. Have you considered he may not want to be in college for an extra year? I hope he makes whatever decision is best for him and his future first, and that it coincides with what is best for the program. If Landry and his family decide he wants to play, and 3.3G agrees with them, DO IT!!!

              • I'm for whatever Landry wants to do. He's shown me he has a maturity level greater than his years, I think he will be smart enough to collaborate with the people closest to him and make the best decision for not only this season, but for the rest of his career.

                • If Landry is really a new edition of Fred and Ron, there's a an excellent chance he's a level headed guy who will have a clear view of the big picture and do what makes sense accordingly, which is all we can ask.

It's all too easy to impose our preferences on someone else's decision making; how many times have we seen that in the endless discussions about Marshall's future? But it's his decision, not ours. We just have to trust that Shamet and those close to him, advised by people like his coach, who's known to be wise and level headed -- and possibly also influenced by some exceptionally wise and level headed teammates -- will make a reasonable choice.

I can already see the second guessers preparing to hop on board if WSU doesn't win a championship this year, with or without Landry, and to launch another onslaught whenever his career at WSU ends. But once he makes a reasonable choice, it doesn't matter how it works out -- making a reasonable choice is all that matters. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but that doesn't make them any less reasonable. Our job is just to trust him and enjoy his play.

                  • i think that if he can be ready to play 1 or 2 games prior to the MVC tourney, then he should play. If he can get a few games in before tourney time, then I think it's a go.

If he can get some tourney experience this year, he will be that much better in his remaining 3 years. And as many have said, what if he isn't going to be here 4 years and we have a legit chance to win a NC. He certainly is not going to hurt those chances by playing.

Granted, Baker had already burned his redshirt, but there is precedent that a returning player can make a HUGE impact.

                    • I, too, think Landry has more than demonstrated he has the maturity to make the right decision. With my own eyes, I saw him opt for the steak stroganoff instead of the childish macaroni and cheese. Not your average freshman here. This is why I can say without a doubt that he will see the floor next week.

                      • I dunno, Dave, you gotta be careful for that beef strokinoff.

OMG, this. Shockernet will literally blow up!

I'd love to see the young man back out on the court this season because I think he just gives 3G another option when it comes to match ups against our opponents. I've said this before but it bears repeating here. I believe Marshall uses his players very strategically, especially when it comes to the post season. He tends to do it more with his bigs but I think that's because of his roster and the fact he hasn't had one dominant big man. Think 3 headed monster during the 35-1 season.

Gregg has had a very solid guard tandem for the past four years and it's hard to mess with that. But he's rarely had the kind of guard talent he has right now and Landry is clearly part of that. Marshall doesn't recruit bench players. There's an expectation that everyone is going to contribute. But our experience is that he always defers to the athlete and their family in these matters after he advises them.

I'm thinking we'll know soon enough.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming, Noodles-N-Thangs with host Dave "The Rave" Stalwart.

                          • It is clearly not at present the PG and SG positions we need to be so concerned about in the NCAA Tournament.

If Landry was 6'8 or taller, we would not even be having this discussion.

                            • Wouldn't it have been nice against IlSU to have another solid shooting guard that likes to drive the lane and takes care of the ball as an option? Just another guy that maybe wasn't frigid cold and maybe would've made us go 2 or 3 of 14 from 3 instead of 1 of 14 probably wins the game.

I think Illinois State's defense and athleticism had a little to do with our frigid shooting.
