  • Take away Fred's 3's to end the half and he was a clear liability the whole game. On D he essentially was just standing a few feet from the 3 line the whole time. At one point his man got around him near half court and Fred wasn't able to run even 75% to catch up. He just lightly jogged and hoped a teammate would help. It's clear he is no where near 100% and should not have been out there.

    Shaq frustrates me.

We didn't deserve to win that game. Tulsa is the better team right now. We looked completely lost half the night.

Not proud of yesterday's effort at all.

I was surprised Tulsa didn't go at Fred every time down the floor. You could tell he was struggling all night.

I agree, Several of their wide open threes were because of Fred. He just didn't have the mobility to fight through any screens.

I mentioned several times that it looked like they had no energy. The only energy came from Ron and Grady. Zach Brown looks scared to dribble. I don't know what happened, but several times hes calling for someone to come help him and he hasn't even tried to drive yet. He should be making a killing with these new rules and drawing fouls. No idea what to think of Shaq. He's reverted to the beginning of last year. Kelly is contributing, he needs to continue to start at the 4. Wessel is not contributing. I don't know if its because he's out of position, but he's not providing the spark he normally does. IMO he needs to at the 4 but behind Kelly. Start Shamet at the 3. He didn't play perfect, but that's expected, he still displayed the energy neeeded. Taylor actually looked like he wanted to be out there (more than some of the older players), but just made mistakes.

All in all, glad it happened now and not later in the season. Marshall will get them into shape.

        • I think Tulsa may be what UNI was last year, good senior led team that will win a lot of games. They could very well be undefeated come January 1st.

We will know much more about ourselves after Orlando.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

          • Those folks asking for Shamet to start need to be reminded that he fouled out in ten minutes.

You're right about FVV on defense. Other than those 3's, Fred was 0 for 7 on offense which is rough too. That said, he had zero turnovers and three assists, which is crazy considering his injuries. Taylor was only in 5 minutes, and he was 0 for 3, with no assists and one turnover (in his defense, at least two of those shots came when we were hitting desperation time). Fred at full health is the best point guard in the country. Our back up, true point guard is a freshman that is making freshman mistakes right now. Our other option is Baker, and we benefit so much when he gets to run without the ball. I think it's starting to look like Connor is going to get some pretty decent time at the one.

Last night, if Fred doesn't play we go into half down by eight or more. We just don't have a great backup yet, so Fred had to play. Taylor is going to be an excellent point guard, but he's making mistakes right now. Turnovers killed us last night. Baker is a really good point guard, but he doesn't get the benefit of having Baker as his own two-guard. Shamet is a darn good shooting guard for a freshman, but he isn't an all-american yet. I think if Fred is 100%, we win this game. I think if this game were played in February (same circumstances: Fred at 50% but our freshmen have 20 games under their belt), we win. Hindsight is 20-20, so it's easy to say "we lost anyway, we might as well have let Fred rest." But without Fred, we had zero shot at victory last night.

              • I see some parallels here...

“The importance is to learn how to compete, to learn how to play against the best, to see how you handle success and see how you handle failure,” said Izzo. “If you look at it that way, then these games are really, really important. If you look at what does a win mean in November or a loss mean in November, in our sport I can see why people think there’s not as much value to the game…but I think the learning process for the players and coaches is really the critical part of playing the tough schedule early.”

                    • I don't mean to single anybody out but where are all the Ty Taylor fans at?

                      That was hellacious.

                      • I was hoping Evan would have scored more in a big game. He was 1-4 from the field. He looks like he has a nice touch from the field. He just needs to shoot more. He did have 4 assists. though, the most on the team.

                        • I hope Tulsa fans get the most out of this season because with 9 seniors and Frank Haith coaching, it's gonna be a while before they're relevant again.

He may not have been great, but he's a freshman. I was encouraged that he wasn't scared though and at least tried to make things happen. I can't say the same about some of Freshmen/Sophomores.

Of course he's a freshman. And a very raw one at that. And that's why he's not ready for the backup spot behind Fred like some have mentioned.

                              • Tyrone was lost, but at least he was actively lost. I don't think he'll see a lot of minutes this year but whatever minutes he gets should be beneficial for next year.
