In his recent interview on the Jim Rome Show (IIRC) Coach Marshall said that when he took the Wichita State job he did not put any preconceived limitations on what he thought he could achieve here. I think we should extend that same thinking to a player like Brett Barney. Big guys seem to take longer to develop, especially those who grew a lot in the last two years of high school. Garrett Stutz was a good example of that. Not exactly a world class athlete when he arrived at Wichita State (not a great athlete by the time he graduated either but he certainly developed into an effective big man). Also keep in mind that Brett has missed quite a bit of work this fall due to the stress reaction in his foot and has fallen behind in terms of conditioning and practice time. Will he develop into a player that will earn a scholarship? Who knows, but I see no reason to put any preconceived limits to what extent Brett might develop. I say go for it young man. You wouldn't be the 1st or even 2nd big man to go from fifi to he-man as a Shocker. The great thing about Brett is that their really is only upside.

I'm in no way saying I believe he will have a similar development/skyrocketing ability, but if I recall correctly, wasn't Frank the Tank a walk-on when he started at Wisky? Or at least a redshirt? I remember hearing something about it, but don't remember the details.

He very well may have been. Pretty sure he was also spotted streaking down to the quad during that time. But that was only because everybody was doing it. Lol

I think we all agree that Barney is a nice walk-on that can play at a high level...for a walk-on. K-State coach Bruce Weber gave Brian Rohleder, a former walk-on, a scholy for his senior year. Good for Weber and good for Brian. This program is not K-State. WSU is now firmly in the game to recruit top-150 players, and in multiple cases top-100 players. Barney is not, and will never be considered in that company. Therefore Barney will not ever receive a scholy. I will root as hard for him, when in the game, as much as I do for any other player. If they are in a Shocker uniform, they get my undivided attention...period.

How often has Kentucky granted scholarships to walk-ons in recent years? I can name several. EJ Floreal on the current team, for one.

Getting players who will turn down low-level D1 scholarship offers to walk-on at the school they really want to play at is a mark of a great program. Whether he ever earns a scholarship will depend on his play, or on an unlucky streak at recruiting that leaves a scholarship open one year.

Anyone know if we have a former walk-on currently on scholarship this year? :poster_wu:

You know as well as I that player you speak of was always going to get a scholy going forward. Barney doesn't equal Baker.

Some thoughts on Barney. He did remind me of a basketball star named Paul Miller. Paul was not very good until his Senior year (maybe a little his Junior year). If Barney works and improves to as good as Miller was during his 4th and 5th years of eligibility, I wouldn't put it past Gregg to reward him because he could be a major player by then but to compare him to Baker is apples and oranges.

This. After another year in the 3G system and the Rosenboom school of badassery, Nurger may well become a dominant post player at some point over the next few years.

I don't believe Kentucky is a good comparable to WSU when looking at walk-ons later getting a schollie. Last year was an aberration. Normally, "Calimari" will have 7-8 players who are head and shoulders above 11-13. Many are one-and-dones or players that didn't pan out to be as great as projected. He also gets players from the state of Kentucky who could get a DI scholarship somewhere or, even, a lot of places, but they would rather walk-on to their beloved Wildcats. They are still not near what the 1-7 players are, but he will reward some of them who stay with the program for 3-4 years and see some time with a scholarship. He has them to give.

WSU on the other hand does "not recruit bench players". They will either make it or wash out and be replaced by others who will challenge for playing time. He also uses his 12 and 13th schollie for red-shirting. RSs who end up getting a scholarship at WSU are either unique circumstances (Baker, CF) that were going to get one anyway or the rare walk-on who ends up challenging #4-9 players for playing time. Marshall does not have the luxury that Calimari has in trying to stay as a highly relevant team.
