I sat beside Brett at WSU games for 3 years. His parents sat beside him. I bought the seat the family gave up when Brett's older brother went to college. Brett would take a redshirt if he felt he could get more game time in year 5 than in year 1. I don't think paying his own way is a big factor.
I didn't get into personal stuff and I don't know what Brett's Dad does for a living, but he often showed up for games wearing clothes that indicated a professional position. I have the feeling that the cost of tuition for 5 years would be worth every penny for his parents to get to watch him on the court of the team they love and support.
Getting on the roster at WSU is probably a lifelong dream. When I knew him, his playing for WSU wasn't in consideration. He grew 4 inches the year after I had to give up my season tickets. I ran into him at Shocker Madness the next year. That was 3 years ago, and he was 6'9" then, so he's had some time to grow into his body.
I kept checking HS ball to see if he was getting any run for All-State or anything, and he really wasn't getting much recognition in HS.
