I sat beside Brett at WSU games for 3 years. His parents sat beside him. I bought the seat the family gave up when Brett's older brother went to college. Brett would take a redshirt if he felt he could get more game time in year 5 than in year 1. I don't think paying his own way is a big factor.

I didn't get into personal stuff and I don't know what Brett's Dad does for a living, but he often showed up for games wearing clothes that indicated a professional position. I have the feeling that the cost of tuition for 5 years would be worth every penny for his parents to get to watch him on the court of the team they love and support.

Getting on the roster at WSU is probably a lifelong dream. When I knew him, his playing for WSU wasn't in consideration. He grew 4 inches the year after I had to give up my season tickets. I ran into him at Shocker Madness the next year. That was 3 years ago, and he was 6'9" then, so he's had some time to grow into his body.

I kept checking HS ball to see if he was getting any run for All-State or anything, and he really wasn't getting much recognition in HS.

He sounds like a classic late bloomer. And that would add value to a redshirt.

        1. He had d-1 offers
        2. We do not have any knowledge of the conversations between him and coach prior to his making the decision.
        3. Even though I don't put much stock in exhibition games, his brief appearance tells me that he has plenty of potential, as he did well.

It's quite possible that Brett may end up with a schollie before he graduates. To me, I like to see players rewarded for their hard work and initiative. I will also add that it will be up to him to see if he becomes good enough to earn a schollie, but if he continues to play as well as he played on Saturday, by no means would I rule out him being on scholarship before he graduates.

P.S. If someone knows more about the situation than I do, please speak up and inform the rest of us whether Marshall has ever made a public statement that he will not put Barney on a scholarship.

I won't believe a true walk-on will earn one of Marshall's scholarships until I see it happen. The kids might believe they will be good enough to earn a scholarship at some point, but I think Marshall has better uses for his schollies. As for Barney redshirting, there are many possible reasons. As mentioned, maybe he thinks he can earn a scholarship in the future, maybe he thinks he can earn playing time in the future, maybe he wants to preserve a year in case he wants to try and play somewhere else, maybe he's planning on taking 5+ years to graduate anyways and wants to be a part of the basketball team for as long as possible.

Zach Bush took a redshirt. It happens. If the player and coach agree, what difference does it make? He's not taking up a scholarship.

I think we all agree that Barney is a nice walk-on that can play at a high level...for a walk-on. K-State coach Bruce Weber gave Brian Rohleder, a former walk-on, a scholy for his senior year. Good for Weber and good for Brian. This program is not K-State. WSU is now firmly in the game to recruit top-150 players, and in multiple cases top-100 players. Barney is not, and will never be considered in that company. Therefore Barney will not ever receive a scholy. I will root as hard for him, when in the game, as much as I do for any other player. If they are in a Shocker uniform, they get my undivided attention...period.

The cool thing about having Barney and a more experienced Bush and Simon, whenever they go in for mop up minutes, the score differential might not drop. At least not as much.

We have Payton Allen as a walk-on this year, as well as Conner (don't know if that was "planned" or "earned"). In previous years we've had Kadeem Coleby and Malcolm Arstead. I don't think Barney will earn a scholarship under Marshall. He will make every attempt to recruit over him. That said, if Barney progresses, he might have an opportunity for meaningful minutes as a senior.

You forgot that Marshall is leaving next year, half the team will depart, and the next coach will find the cupboard bare. Barney will get that scholly.

In his recent interview on the Jim Rome Show (IIRC) Coach Marshall said that when he took the Wichita State job he did not put any preconceived limitations on what he thought he could achieve here. I think we should extend that same thinking to a player like Brett Barney. Big guys seem to take longer to develop, especially those who grew a lot in the last two years of high school. Garrett Stutz was a good example of that. Not exactly a world class athlete when he arrived at Wichita State (not a great athlete by the time he graduated either but he certainly developed into an effective big man). Also keep in mind that Brett has missed quite a bit of work this fall due to the stress reaction in his foot and has fallen behind in terms of conditioning and practice time. Will he develop into a player that will earn a scholarship? Who knows, but I see no reason to put any preconceived limits to what extent Brett might develop. I say go for it young man. You wouldn't be the 1st or even 2nd big man to go from fifi to he-man as a Shocker. The great thing about Brett is that their really is only upside.

Don't go over there. Little brother is about to sic the NCAA on us again (once they get done clearing Diallo, of course). After all, WSU shouldn't be able to get good recruits, much less from a local prep school.

If he keeps working hard and keeps getting stronger it will only benifit him and the Shocks. I could see him as a starter in a few years, and if not someone who could play 15 to 20 minutes a game...
Nice strategy by Nurger too. By extending his college career to five years and given his maturity, he enhances his ability to play pro ball. While he may not play NBA ball, he possibly could play 10-12 years of pro ball. If so, he will earn quite a bit of money.
