I'm guessing the difference between UT's offer and WSU's best counter is less than $1M. The "crazy" numbers were coming out in reference to the Alabama job. Has anyone seen references indicating UT plans to throw out stupid money in their zest for a top shelf HC? If 3G leaves it will not be because of a multi-generational financial windfall, it will be other considerations.

I still think Marshall is just enjoying the dog and pony show while Sexton puts together a new contract. That's my gut. Who knows if UT actually interests him, or if it ever has. His 'interest' could be nothing more than media members projecting their own logic into his circumstances. There's a lot of 3G boxes that the Texas job does not check. A lot.

If my goal was to retire as soon as possible, a 50% pay bump, I would take the big money. Otherwise, life is very good and happiness is hard to duplicate.

(I'm obviously guessing on the salary but am considering some raise at WSU to maybe 2.4 and UT offering 3.6--no need to debate the details, not the point of the poll)

The new job has pros and cons:
It probably won't allow as much success (however that is defined) in the short term as your present job.
It may or may not allow more success long term--that is not clear one way or another.
It definitely has a lot less job security than your current job.
Most people at the institution/company you will work for take your branch of work less seriously than some other branches which don't exist at your current job.
Unknown relationships with co-workers, bosses, etc.

If you feel like participating, vote based on whatever your situation is regarding family and friends, your job, etc.
I voted yes, mostly because I think "he gone" if offered. The money, although probably won't change their lifestyle, is an ego thing. All these coaches are type A's with big ego's, its what makes them a success in this business, and money is how they measure their success. After that, living in Austin > Wichita, I luv the ICT but if I could live in Austin with no state tax and better weather I would. Recruiting, HCGM will never have to leave the state to put together a team capable of winning the NC. It's hard to win at WSU, thats why our coach is in demand. Finally I don't think job security is an issue, Barnes lasted 17 years with mostly mediocre results, HCGM only needs to last 10-14 to make it to retirement. If he last that long he will have probably made an extra 18-25 million...No sane person will pass that up. I say thanks for the memories coach, no way any shocker fan thought we could get back to the F4, and good luck with your new gig, just don't take Ron with you.

Though I am not a Texas tax expert, the fact Texas has no state income tax is offset by many other ways to make up for it. I had a client once who moved to Dallas who said she wished she was back in KC because she was being taxed to death.

I wouldn't, but in my case, I have spent a lot of time placing myself strategically where I could work past retirement if I wanted (or needed) to.

Of course, we're talking millions and millions in HCGM's case. If the money on the table was in the millions, I'd take the money and run. By the time they got around to firing me for some trumped-up reason (like firing my assistants), I could refuse and make them buy me out.

The myth of low taxes in Texas is exactly that, a myth. I pay a buttload in taxes here, our property taxes are the highest in the nation. I looked at a $400k home in a gated community, but decided not to move right now, as my property taxes (for a similarly valued property) would have went up to over $10K per year.

I will say this again: it will cost at least twice as much for Marshall to get a comparable home in Austin and his property taxes will run in the neighborhood of $50K per year. I bet his property and income taxes in KS are lower.

Would also like to point out that our homeowners insurance rates are behind only Florida. He would probably pay 10k for a HO policy with a reasonable deductible on anannual basis.

10k to him is like 350 to me....350 doesnt bother me

35 or 40K (total cost increase to live) would equate to 1400. At some point it adds up. Highest property taxes, highest homeowners rates.....starts to add up after awhile.

I don't know about you, be I like to keep my money. Property taxes and HO insurance are pretty much required as a HO.

Of course there's also the infamous Texas ranch exemption, but they're starting to crack down on that these days.

The Texas job isn't as glamorous as it may look. It's not a job where losing to the K-State's and Texas Tech's of the world is acceptable. And losing to those peons of the Big 12 is exactly what Barnes did the past 5 years or so. Beating Texas over and over made Frank Martin look like a genious and made ksu seem relevant. While all that was going on, Barnes' ship was slowly sinking.

Note Barnes only missed the NCAAs 1 year out of 17.

The reason the regents let him go was the 5 opening round losses. Creighton would be ecstatic if they had a coach that won their first round tourney game 2/3 of the time.

To get the topic back to the hypothetical of a comparable circumstance, I would definitely stay based on family, friends, schools, community etc. Also job security would be an issue but the more personal factors would loom largest for me.

Austin is not a decent location. Its a pretty hot town. The new silicon valley. A better town/state then wichita if you want an exciting place to live. Coach Marshall has an ego. He likes to have people come after him. It doesn't mean he's going to go. He is in a great situation now. He may go or he may stay. I wouldn't worry.
