I'd bet a beer or two in St. Louis 4 years from now, that the names Thurman and Marshall will have caused much more opponent angst than Baker and Van Fleet."
Nothing to see here. We owe this guy a beer actually. Angst is probably a perfect word to describe what they've done to Bears fans. Wait, he said "opponent angst." Nevermind.

So will that be good for every Shocker fan that attends Arch Madness next year?

BTW, damn good memory or did you just stumble across that tidbit.

I don't think that thread has made it off the first page of mvcfans.com for going on 3 years.

            • Some of you old fans help me out here. I believe that 30 odd years ago Cliff's leaving for the NBA came with very little fanfare while AC held a news conference to announce he was staying. Is my recollection correct?

At that time you didn't leave early. Cliff left due to the NCAA ban, and it was somewhat disgraceful I believe (I was a very young lad at the time).

Marshall is an excellent player. Where did he end up? What about Thurman?

                  • Probably in this thread somewhere but Yahoo mentions both VanVleet and Baker are returning per Wichita State sources.

While the NCAA penalties likely had an impact on Cliff's decision, there were certainly players declaring for the draft before their senior year. Some of those declaring early in 1982 were Terry Cummings, Clark Kellogg, LaSalle Thompson, Dominique Wilkins and James Worthy among others. I just don't remember much fanfare about Cliff's departure.

Bahaha, the most "famous last words" I've ever seen. I'm about to put that crap quote on a plaque right next to my framed "Wichita State Completes A Perfect Regular Season" newspaper.

Edit: the fact that the idiot spelled it Van Fleet on purpose is just epic karma.

I don't really recall anyone thinking it was disgraceful or viewed it negatively. It was not totally unheard of for someone to go to the NBA draft after their sophomore or junior year. I do recall that there was a lot of speculation that it was about timing. That Cliff was told he would go earlier in the draft that year than he would if he waited until his senior year.

I just stumbled across it today. Someone else bumped it.

                            • There was talk at the time that the bookends didn't want to be in the same draft. The thought was that their value would be diminished if both were available. AC stayed and Cliff went.
One quick note before we present the rankings: With Wichita State’s move to the American Athletic Conference, the Shockers have moved out of the mid-major club. We wish the Shockers well against Cincinnati, UConn, SMU, and more.
