"There are schools like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Wichita State, Villanova and Xavier at which garnering interest in regular-season games is never an issue -- even against their football-focused counterparts."

    Fixed.

Interesting thoughts...although I chuckled at this quote.

One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong.

Well, to be fair, three of them really don't belong. Two for patently obvious reasons (uh... <10K average attendance in a non-P5 conference), and one because the people in the seats at the game don't actually realize there's a game going on.

College Hoops Mailbag: Who has the best starting five this season?

Q: What's Wichita State's ceiling this year? Top 5 contender or pretender?

A: I'd say somewhere in the middle is a fair bet. I mean, sure, the Shockers could eventually get to the top-five in the regular season given that Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker are still around and will be the best players in the MVC by a good distance. And due to the consistency of those guys and their past success, it would be impossible to call them a pretender. We know these guys can really play, so there aren't really any "Paper Tiger" qualities about them.

However, I'd fall just short of putting them in my top-10 teams most likely to win a national title. There are some pretty significant questions with this group on the interior that they need to figure out after losing Darius Carter from what was a pretty short-handed group as it was last year. Also, they're going to feel the loss of Tekele Cotton on the perimeter pretty heavily. He took on a lot of tough defensive assignments and allowed Baker and VanVleet to conserve just a bit more energy than they otherwise could have without him. So while I think they're a team that could get to another Final Four this year if things broke right for them just due to their terrific guard play, leadership, and physicality, I wouldn't put them in my top-five (and I think few would, anyway).

I mean seriously, name 10 other teams who have our combination of talent, experience, and upside.

I bet this dude voted for John McCain and Sarah "Her?" Palin.

          • Still a lot of non-believers. So it goes. If someone can sit down and make pointed, rational arguments for 10 different teams as to why they are more likely than WSU to compete for a national championship this year, I would be very surprised and would like to read the write-ups.

I still love that losing seniors is always counted against WSU without giving credit for incoming talent. It's exactly the opposite as many of the supposed 'contenders' where the assumption is always that the latest 6* recruit must be better than what they lost last year. And yet, here we are 5 years on with this theory, still churning out more and more talented players that no one believed would adequately replace those before them.

            • I don't think there are 10 teams better than WSU, but I do think the top 10, WSU included, are all really evenly matched.

I agree with the assessment, but not the conclusion.

                  • I was worried there wasn't gonna be enough locker room material to feed the wolves this year.

But the national media will always find a way to pull through.

Even dumber than Jimmy, Bill, Hillary, John, Barack and Joe! But you got him beat by a long shot.

I may be dumb but luckily I live in a state full of people so dumb they voted Sam Brownback in as governor. It makes me feel much better about myself.

                          • The important thing to remember when you are making political insults is that literally half of the people in your country, in your state, in your city, even on your own street or in your family don't actually agree with you. People you know and like are the ones you are talking about whether you realize it or not. In many cases, you are calling half of your own friends dumb and hiding behind the fact that its broad and impersonal so that makes it okay. I do my own fair share of it, so I'm no saint. Politics alienates people and drives wedges into friendships when it's done that way.

                            • I have an unrelated question that I've been thinking about a little bit off and on for a couple weeks. I remember reading somewhere that there wouldn't be much of a recruiting class for 2017, because the only people graduating will be walk-ons. Thus the question...if 3G isn't able to land all the player(s) he wants from the class of 2016, but has a good feeling about a player or two from 2017, is there ever any chance he may decide to reward a walk-on or two with scholarships for their senior years, so that those scholarships will be available for 2017? Other than the obvious benefit of using your scholarships on the best possible players, is there anything else that would keep this from happening?
