A racial slur only has power against the race where it's intended as a slur. The word is not wrong in and of itself. The word is wrong because it's been used for centuries as a part of dehumanization of a group of people based on the color of their skin.

The word has no meaning when it's used towards a white guy ... literally none.

The word existed before white racists co-opted it. The word is not wrong -- the word when used with racial prejudice is wrong. The problem is that white people abused the word as part of racial prejudice for so long that we've lost the right to get the benefit of the doubt on its usage.
So your contending it's a compliment/term of endearment between afraican-americans and racist when used by anyone else?

I'm contending that I'm not a member of the African American community, and so not in a position to say how it is used within that community.

As a member of the white community, the term has been used in direct connotation with segregation, murder, slavery, and systematic racism, and it is impossible to divorce its use from a white person from those facts.

It's like a gun. There are many people out there who are responsible gun owners, who deserve every right to use the weapon in a responsible way, per their choosing, until it infringes on the rights of others. But once you've used the gun in a way that infringes on the rights of others, you don't get to use guns anymore.

But I'm not going to tell the people who haven't recklessly abused guns that they ALSO have to have their guns taken away, because others can't use them responsibly, and so they can't have them either. You punish the people abusing the usage, and only them.

I agree entirely with the terms direct connotation with segregation, murder, slavery, and systematic racism. It is precisely because of this connection that I contend use of the word should be avoided.

In the bold portion of an earlier comment it might appear that you did speak as to
...say how it is used within that community...
@Rlh04d: I believe that we are in agreement as to the horrible history of the word. Where we seem to disagree; I do not think the word should be used, regardless if it was in common lexicon sometime in the 18th or 19th century, by anyone in today's day and age. You believe it is either acceptable for some and not so for others to use the word or that non-African Americans should not have any thoughts on the word's use. I respect your opinion regardless which it might be.

        No worries here.

My point about "literally none" is that a word that draws it's strength from white-on-black racism simply cannot have that same meaning when used in the inverse, anymore than calling a white guy a racist term for an Asian has the racist-connotation that would exist from a white guy using the same term against a Vietnamese person. And there isn't close to the backstory behind that racist term. A racist term derives its power from the racist meaning and the racist history behind it.

However, you're right ... I shouldn't have used the phrase like "literally no meaning" (moving my words around). I can't say what meaning Harrison meant the word in. He might have meant it in a terrible way. All I know is that he could not have used it in the way that makes the word horrible, because the word does not have the same meaning when directed against a white person. However Harrison might have meant it, no white person is going to feel the word in the way a black person would.

Personally, I'd prefer if the word wasn't used at all, either. I think we're pretty close in opinion there. But, unquestionably, the word has different meanings when used in regards to a different race -- it just doesn't have centuries of racial prejudice behind it in the same way when used in the inverse. I've had a number of conversations recently with black friends about this, and I can see every stance -- the people that are just desensitized to it, the people that completely detest it in all usage, or the people that think they should be allowed to use it. I can see the credibility of each of those arguments. But my preference that the word isn't used at all is just a preference; personally I think that's something that has to come from internal in that community.

                • Seems like both teams are forcing a lot of shots. I thought things would smooth out at the under 16, the the under 12. Hasn't happened.

I expected a little Kentucky hangover and that they will come out strong in the second half.

Well, WSU was one of the teams listed on ESPN.

I don't recall see every school on the list ;)
