Student athletes being honored at this particular time because the biggest community of fans is present for men's basketball? That seems especially lame to me.
I could be off, but my impression has always been that college athletes generally don't care much about the sports in which they are not involved.

My assumption is that most of them didn't even enter the actual arena except for halftime.

      Funny, but over the line.
You don't need professionals you just need one adult to surpervise and a small amount of training on what you want done and how you want it done. I would imagine there are thousands of Shocker fans who don't have tickets to the game who would love to volunteer as a supervisor of the ball boys.

Edit: Just to clarify - you need one trained adult at each end of the court.

      • I agree with the point about Darius' back. Last night's game reminded me of how we played when he would be on the bench in foul trouble earlier in the season. Fortunately foul troubles can be fixed, but back problems aren't so easy to fix. Hopefully it's just something that will take time to get better and he takes it easy short term to be ready long term, come March and wherever life takes him after college. What we don't need is a Joel Embiid type situation where the injury was much more serious than at first thought or people were led to believe. The freshman are playing better, so we'll be okay without Darius for long stretches compared to earlier in the season, but if there was ever a good time for them to get it and excel, now would be ideal.

It's impossible for me to imagine ever replacing winners like Cotton, VanVleet, Baker and Wessel.
I completely agree, Doc. We may certainly in the future be fortunate to have individual players who are occasionally as good, but having such an outstanding group as this, all together playing at the same time (and Cle last year), hopefully will not be a rareity, but at the same time it certainly could be.

That's why we need to enjoy and treasure what we have now. And hope that GM will continue to recruit such outstanding young men as we have been fortunate to have over the last several years.

I was in line to see the facial expressions (Bobby Knight like), etc and I can tell you everyone near me had a bad reaction.

One more thing... HCGM and the staff clearly wanted to go offense for defense with Glass and RK. They forgot or almost forgot throughout the second half. If million dollar guys forget to do simple things in the heat of the moment they should try to be a little more lenient with the six year olds.

Take this FWIW; I wasn’t able to attend the game. It appeared on Cox (sucks) 2022 that Zach Brown (ZB1) slipped on the wet floor causing coach Marshall to momentarily lose it; it also appeared that coach Moser noticed the same thing and almost lost it. ‘The Bruce’ indicated that Zach was limping after slipping on the wet spot. I'm sure HCGM had some regrets about his immediate reaction towards the kids, however he likely wanted to make a point with the administration. The players are part of his family and he protects them like a papa bear. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when he met with Connor after the weekend incident. Yikes! No, HCGM isn’t perfect; but I love his passion and would want him protecting my foxhole.

I'm going to disagree with you on this. Professionals can be held accountable and they will do a better job and be more conscientious about the job they are doing. I've remarked to my seat mates more than once this year about the kids going in circles out there with absolutely no supervision (unless a ref points something out). There was one kid a couple of games ago that was mopping up (so to speak) in time with the band. This may not look like an important job - but oh how wrong that is. I don't want to EVER see an athlete (on either team) get hurt on our home court because some child did not know what or when to do something or was not given direction to do so. We have all seen close-ups on TV of our guys with sweat dripping off them and I know we have all seen athletes on both teams slip and fall. This is not a laughing matter or something that you can just say coach got a little bent out of shape over. I can't imagine there is not enough money in the coffers to pay a professional crew to do this. Work something out with a local company. There should be one or more that would be willing to donate time and personnel for the advertising it would get during the game, or possibly a part donate, part pay arrangement. We have smart people in the Athletic Department -- get on it. Keep Coach happy and keep all the players safe.

              • It sounds like a perfect job for the freshmen in the sports management program.

Heck, open it up to anyone in that program and pay them $10-$20/game, just as the pep band members get paid.

                  • The mopping issue has been a sore subject for me for years. Just ask my wife. I hate it when referees or players have to go grab a mop because the kids have no clue. I don't place a lot of blame on the kids, they need some adult supervision. It came to a point last night and I hope it is addressed once and for all. I'm glad that it was only feelings that got hurt and not a player.

I thought it was a class act for David Hall to go over and give one of the kids a pat on the back.

Somehow I think those kids will be compensated for any embarrassment they might have suffered.

If nothing else, I volunteer the local Shockernetters to fill the position of moppers or mop supervisors as required. My only stipulation is that, should Creighton return to CKA, Fever gets that game.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

They may have to wait a year until Conner finishes up his tenure as sweat boy.

                      • I've always thought you could create a volunteer crew of floor sweepers/moppers and really have some fun and competition with it. Show some hustle. You can't blame the young kids, it doesn't look like they have been told much of anything about what they need to be doing plus they aren't going to have the attention required to be Johnny on the spot. However, I do think they could do the job with a minimum amount of training and an adult on hand to supervise and guide.

I know in my younger days when I did not have access to tickets that I would volunteered in a heartbeat to surpevise or be on a floor sweeper/mopper crew.

4 or 5 years ago when the mop crew was sponsored by KFC you could just put your name in a box at KFC and they randomly drew names. My son got to do this and had no idea what the F he was supposed to do or what was going on.

If we go that route I know which manager I'm voting for to get one those assignments.
