I'll try to stay away an emotional type response, but it is hard for it not to be involved.
There is never a "better" time for something like this to happen, only worse. The more important a student athlete is to the program and/or the more visible he is, the more damning it will be to the program. I do not believe punishment should be any different for a star player or one on the end of the bench when it comes to scholarship athletes. I do believe the quality of past character history, and the length of time it has been shown, counts.
Therefore, I view Connor's situation to be a dire one. One of terrible timing. He has not built any meaningful quality time with his teammates, the coaching staff, or the school's fan base. What would be the reaction of the team, coaches, and fans had this happened to a new recruit, not from the area or state? How the punishment, whatever it is, is dished out, sets a precedence, or at least an expected level of reprimand for current and future student athletes. Glad that's above my pay grade. Connor does have the next 11-12 months to gain his teammates and coaches trust. This is both a good thing and a bad. The good, I just stated. The bad, as a transfer, is that he should have known that making that great first impression is extremely important and that just went down the toilet. The other "bad" that may exist is how would such a situation be handle for any new recruit, without the forced sitting out period. The old adage is you get a players best attention by setting him down, not playing him. IMHO, punishment only during the next 11-12 months is not enough and would be less meaningful than taking actual playing time away. Keep in mind, that I stated that I believe one's history within the program, prior to an incident, counts.
Now for my emotional side. It burnt me that a current player or recruit, who wanted to be at WSU from the beginning, may face a different fate than if there was no transfer. With this incident, it burns me a lot more. Of course, I need to weigh this feeling with the possibility that if it was not Connor, it might have been someone else anyway. We are now playing, and paying for, big time basketball. This is not Y ball and, frankly, the student athletes should know that.
OK. I'll get off my soapbox for this thread, although, if I made something confusing or poorly worded, I'll respond.

Been hearing the Dillon's Sunflower Showdown commercials, so I think part of Conner's punishment should be to stand outside of local Dillon's with a placard that reads - "There's no Sunflower Showdown without WSU" on one side, and "My hometown Dillon's has more KSU and KU things for sale than WSU things" on the other side :)

That said, I just laugh whenever Kai sends out another "shape up or we will start implementing temporary bans" note in a thread that had become hostile.
Fever has told me to "GFY" and the admin don't even comment.
The next time I see a note from the admin about behavior, I'm not sure I'll be able to finish reading it. I'll be laughing too hard.
