Although, it's important to remember that this is the same list that had some pretty ridiculous placements earlier. I won't complain, though, because a list that respects the Marshall and places him top 8 or better is automatically infallible and exempt from criticism.
I get where you're coming from, but any list that is based on "recent coaching performance" that doesn't have Marshall in the Top 5 isn't a good list. That isn't to say that Marshall is one of the Top 5 coaches in the country, but based on recent performance (3 years):

      Record: 93-16 (85.3%)
      Road: 29-6 (82.9%)
      Conf: 46-8 (85.2%) (52-10, 83.4% w/ Conf. Tourney games incl.)
2 MVC Conference Titles (1 by 2 games, 1 by 6 games, finished 2nd by 1 game in other year)
      1 MVC Tournament Title
3 NCAA Tournament Appearances (Average Seed of 5)
      1 NCAA Tournament Regional Championship
      Cancun Tournament Championship
      CBE Tournament Championship
      3-time MVC COY
2014 National COY by every publication ever
1st Undefeated Regular season since 2004
      1st Undefeated Pre-NCAA Tournament season since 1991

      Record vs
      RPI
      1-50 12 8
      51-100 19 6
      101-200 40 2

      • Indeed it is pretty good, DJ. I don't think it's time for Marshall tomorrow, either; I agree that Ryan is likely to be #8. Beyond that, we're getting pretty high up the mountain.

Regardless of where he ends up, considering that lots of people -- such as players, dads (and probably the occasional mom too), and AAU and high school coaches -- read ESPN, it can't fail to help for Marshall to get the publicity that a high ranking will give him and WSU. The word will probably also get out about the NBA GM's comments on Marshall and WSU that were reported in PaulS's recent article about Cleanthony Early.

All of this stuff just has to make future recruiting easier, as better and better players start to think in terms of checking out Marshall and his program, and as the ones who fit in decide they like what they see when they do.

        • I will roar with laughter if ESPN ranks Gregg above Self anticipating the implosion on Phognet. It should be entertaining.

That actually hadn't occurred to me yet. :) Now, I'm a little more excited

            • Just to be amongst this final select group of future Hall of Fame coaches is an honor in itself for Coach Marshall.

Naturally we want him to end up #1 and his record over the last several years certainly warrants it.

But, where ever he ends up in the final selection process is now guaranted to be a most significant achievement that he, and all of us, can be most proud of.

It would be surprising for that to happen (Marshall over Self, that is -- can't comment on Phognet, as I don't believe I've ever visited), but not totally shocking.

The meltdown would be hysterical and I'm sure a boycott of everything ESPN would be motioned.

I refer you to my above post which points out why this is still probably too low, given the criteria of the poll.

I do like the last line of this related article:

i agree with your previous post, but they wouldn't rank him top-5 even if/when he wins a national championship.

oh, and prepare yourself for the hate in the comments section. their tears will taste delicious.

                          • Not an unreasonable placement, although I'd have probably put him ahead of Ryan. I can see why some would not, though -- he's still "at this level," after all.

Just one more motivational chip that he'll undoubtedly find a way to use. Should be a great season ahead.

                            • marshall replenishes his teams year after year, a'la duke, kentucky etc., with players that nobody has heard of. he's not bringing in nba first-rounders by the bushel. he is as good as anybody in the country.. anybody.

oh, and thank you nc state fans and associates for believing that you were too good for gregg marshall.

More to the point -- thank you, Gregg Marshall, for realizing that NC State wasn't good enough for you.
