I hear you, but we are not Gonzaga. Splitting hairs analyzing a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament with the intent of deciphering an easier game seems counter productive is all.

      Well played!

I think Cal-Poly is the favorite in this one, despite their record. I'm not sure it matters which one wins. We've had a schedule full of teams better and should have little problem taking care of business.

Near upsets of #16 versus #1 Seeds:

◾1985 – Michigan 59, Fairleigh Dickinson 55. 1985 was the year the tournament expanded to 64 teams so this close game wasn’t as big a deal. In fact, bracktologists often say the seeding of the tournament back in the 80s was primitive and led to more upsets or near upsets.

◾1989 – Georgetown 50, Princeton 49. Similar to Syracuse getting favorable calls down the stretch last year, Georgetown got the mother of all calls on the last possession to get by Princeton.

◾1989 – Oklahoma 72, East Tennessee State 71. Never has a #16 seed dominated a game like this one. East Tennessee led by 17 in the first half, eight at halftime, and five at the under four timeout. In fact the only time Oklahoma led was the final minute. East Tennessee didn’t score a basket in the final six minutes, if they just make one shot they’d probably have won.

◾1990 – Michigan State 75, Murray State 71 (overtime). Where have you gone Popeye Jones? This was the only #1 vs. #16 to go to OT.

◾1996 – Purdue 73, Western Carolina 71. The ’96 Purdue team could easily go down as the worst #1 seed of all-time. Western Carolina missed an open shot at the buzzer. In the second round, Purdue went down to Georgia by seven.

We're better than Gonzaga was last year. But Gonzaga was a VERY good team as well. They were way too good to be pushed by a 16 seed the way they were. And it helped fuel the narrative against them, and it's probably why they're now viewed as a failure rather than just being unlucky in running into us. That might change if we make a big run here, but who knows.

I prefer to have a team to root for in any game I watch, though, and I'll be watching these guys since they're up against us. Splitting hairs is about the only way we're going to find anyone to cheer for ;)

Counter productive? Quite possibly. But it's also what happens when a fanbase has nearly two weeks in between games with nothing else to do :D

I was just checking the Cal Poly board and found this bit of wisdom:

We should beat Texas Southern, no question.

Getting Wichita State is a death sentence though. I don't think the committee could resist potentially having those two stories overlap.

It's strange, isn't it? We're the institution located in paradise, with everything to offer our students, while Wichita State is a middle-of-nowhere school in a middle-of-nowhere state. Yet Wichita State is a juggernaut in basketball, while we're just happy to be here.

If Wichita State can become a big winner with so little history, Poly surely can as well. Get on it, Oberhelman.

I know we don't have an elite history, but it always surprises me how many people think WSU has no history. As if that Final Four and two Elite 8s with numerous top 10 NBA draft picks never happened and we just popped on the stage with a Sweet 16 in 2006.
