It really doesn't matter what you call it.
Whenever there are two or more classifications for anything, if you are NOT in the so identified "Upper Strata" then you are somewhat less in status. Especially by those who are perched in the upper strata and who will go to all extremes to prevent you from joining their elite brotherhood.
Sure you can beat them in whatever sporting event you are playing, but it does not really change anything.
Mid-major is a come-down from Major.
Non-BCS is a come-down from BCS.
And the same will be true for any other two distinguishing names you care to choose.
