I don't think the comment was directly meant for the public. He did say it in the media room, so he did expect it to be heard.

Now, it is possible, that instead of all of the questions and pressure being put on the team, the coach is trying to deflate the pressure.

I'm going to preface this post with the comment that I think Marshall is the greatest thing that has happened to WSU in many, many years. But the minute I heard what he said I knew his comment was going to raise hackles. I also know that Marshall is tired of the disrespect he perceives this program receives from the media and from the fan bases of the so-called "elite" programs. Marshall wants that respect. But if you want respect, you have to give respect. I did not hear Marshall make the comment so I don't know what inflection he put on his words, but the way it was reported by the media, the comment was not respectful and was taken by many as a "jab" at MSU. Put yourself in the shoes of the MSU fans. How would you react after hearing that.

Just a reminder that MSU fans haven't exactly been nice to us this season. I've long since moved past the belief that you shouldn't give your critics something to complain about. You could be a saint, and they'll just start making things up anyway.

Why can't the national public be "all the little schools that never got this chance" or whatever the hell the quote in Hoosiers was?
Hmmm,, let's see, oh yeah I remember Dan Patrick last year confront GM about his brash personality that made for an awkward interview. I've read South Carolina and NC State message boards criticizing his personality, and now we got MSU fans who are going to jump on this bandwagon. It's out there hommie, and if you can't see that, then take off the rose colored glasses.

Anyway, I posted this because Gregg did grow up near Norfolk State who are known as the Mighty Spartans.

I hope the team just keeps winning and then all of this is a moot point!

Again you've just declared the BCS world and the elite sports media as the entire national public. Dan Patrick apologized for being an idiot, do you remember that little factoid?

So if BCS land is offended then the gospel is set?

You are either a troll or embarrassed by the perceived inadequacy of your WSU degree by your friends.

Exactly. Honestly I think this rep actually does more good than bad for us.

There are haters aplenty for every nationally successful coaching figure.

Get used to it and grow a thicker skin, everyone.

At least at this point, there isn't that much discussion about it on the Michigan State site. It doesn't take much to get 4 pages of anti Marshall or WSU posts on Phognet. IMO, some on here are making to much of it. It's Gregg being the way he is when his program is not getting the repect from some that they deserve. So, a few MSU fans are upset. Big deal.

I'm about done with this forum board, or so I thought as I'm posting now. The reason is it seems dooms day against the Shox. It seems as WSU is the crappiest team ever to be in the Final Four & a terrible p.o.s. that has won 21 straight games since that appearance.
I thought it was self-loathing fans. Then Villanova passes WSU in the polls. Nevermind that WSU was automatically the 4th team of the Final Four or the lesser ranked of the unbeatens. Every January, whether we want mentioned as receiving votes, or make our case to move up in the polls its the same crap.
By the time post season play rolls around we wonder if WSU can win the KS 4A girls championship. Then, all of a sudden an NIT championship or Final Four appearance happens.
MSU, KU, Villanova or even those teams who are grounded such as Syracuse or Duke. I have no doubt that 10,506 Wichitans, Marshall & his 13 walk-one would welcome any combination of those teams to Koch Arena next November or December. Furthermore, that team would hop on their chartered flight and return the favor the following year.
Screw em all, WSU's accomplishments exceed all but 2 or 3 teams in the NCAA the past two years. Its time to quit feeling slighted. Dont be a jerk, but we've been there. As fans, players, coaches & players, we're there. We nay as well act like we've been there & expect to be there. Any team that comes to WSU plays in front of a packed house, a great atmosphere & plays a pretty good team.
We can be gracious of the compliments & accepting of criticism. But screw those who follow the same process of that journalist that no matter what won't rank WSU higher than 5th. Screw those Wichitans that still buy KU crap that have never set foot on any college campus. I have an idiot in-law like that. Screw the righteous fan base of other teams that think they're automatically anointed & screw that damn president who gets press for picking BcS teams in his bracket. Brackets are unproductive in the workplace. Put yours the hell away & create an American job or three.

Lots of sensitive people in this world I'm finding out. Heck plenty of sensitive people post on this site. My view of it all? Too many people some how manifest self esteem from the accomplishments of college age men who happen to play for the team they root for. Be it KU fans, WSU fans, or MSU fans...get a life people, get over it.

As far as Marshall's comments. Look at it from his point of view, he went to a final four last year, his team has won 21 straight since and yet he has to entertain retarded questions about whether or not he thinks they can beat elite teams. I think the MSU comment was simply a dig at the idea of what an elite team is compared to WSU by the ignorant rather than a dig at MSU specifically. Emotion/Pride however will take over and Marshall/WSU will be hated.

F them and for F sake please stop going to KU's site and reporting back the happenings. Why do you people give two shats about anything on there? I have made a big time effort this year to ignore all that crap, post much less on this site and others, and just enjoy college basketball for what it is. Young amazing athletes playing a sport that is entertaining to watch. Quit using it as a device to pump up your own self worth and it becomes much more enjoyable. Otherwise you will end up like DJA, posting on 50 different boards in a single day trying to make sure everyone knows just how sweet his shat smells.
Totally agree. He can say whatever he wants. You don't have to like it or agree with it. The speech police are out in full force. He calls it like he sees it rather than being a puss about it.

How ridiculous is it that a man can say "so the mighty Spartans lost again" and people all over the country start calling him a dick and an ass and everything else. He asks a rhetorical question without slandering anyone and hundreds of people respond by slandering him? He had every right to say what he did and if you people can't take it go back and move in with your mommies.

Could be, monster, but I'm a huge Marshall fan, and I think Hoops is on target here. Yes, ShockTherapy is right in wondering why anyone would care what other teams' fans would think, especially message board posters -- we're talking the East Lansing and apparently Lawrence equivalents of Cold, KC, and and Fever, for heaven's sake. That's why I have all other message boards mentally on automatic ignore and never even look at them except to follow someone's link on here probably once or twice a year. I don't care what other teams' fans think either.

But that's not the point. I'm just disappointed in the comment. I don't think Marshall was targeting Michigan State; I believe he was making fun of bozos like the guy from South Carolina who annoyed him with a stupid question about elite teams, or Seth Davis and others like him. But it absolutely was ungracious -- that much isn't even arguable, not even if you're right in there applauding the dig -- and, at least in my view, for that reason alone not something that needed saying in public, at least not without more clarity as to who was really the target.

Speaking of mommies, maybe this was time to employ Mom's old rule about what to do "if you can't say something nice..."
