If you think coach was being rude or a bully in that interview than you must be a pu$$ie.

If he overreacts to a question 1% of the time I can live with that, especially in a season when we are winning 100% of our games. Success/results buy you a lot of latitude in all walks of life.

I think Coach Marshall was more testy than he needed to be, but it isn't a big deal. I was surprised he knew how the reporter voted in the AP poll.

I have read the thread on Phognet and they are not complimentary of the way Gregg handled that reporter saying they couldn't imagine Bill Self reacting that way. Really? And just what reporter would have asked Bill Self if he felt he could beat elite teams come March. KU fans don't understand the uphill battle Marshall has to fight every day for respect for his teams. All he wants is that WSU is recognized for what they have accomplished. He wants in the worst way for WSU to be relative and stay relative, and he has to fight for that all that time. I'm sure he gets tired (just like normal human beings) of constantly being on guard and sometimes a question like this just hits a bit too close to home -- and he reacts. No one reports on all the hundreds of times he has great interviews, just on the ones where he gets a bit bent out of shape.

First, I love HCGM and actually chuckled aloud when he called him out on Villanova. Listening to the podcast to be fair to the journo he did ask "other elite teams" indicating that he views WSU as an elite team. Still, the exchange was humorous.
Another funny is when the other journo piled on the first guy about the Villanova thing.

He did not ask, "Do you believe Wichita State is or is not an elite team?" While 3G was direct, he said nothing derogatory or insulting, just asked the guy what an elite team was and asked some specific examples. And asked if we won the next two games, would he put WSU ahead of Villanova who was being smacked by 40 at home? IMHO, these are all fair questions.
I accept and actually enjoy HCGM's ability to go a little off, but to act like it looks good to anyone outside of the program is a bit much. What would a guy a like Barry Sanders think of this type of stuff (I bring him up since he is probably the single best Wichita Athlete and he exuded self-restraint and class)?

HCGM's edginess is what makes him so perfect for this program. I believe that people do like the lesser known programs that are able to establish themselves with the big boys like Gonzaga, Butler, Creighton etc. but those schools have to do it on their own. I always felt that Mark Turgeon was a good coach but not a great fit for WSU because I just didn't see that he had the attitude that was necessary to make us a national household name. We get frustrated when the jeff *******'s of the world refuse to give us respect even when we've clearly deserved it and Marshall is just the coach to call these guys out when given the opportunity. Some may not like his abrasiveness at times but it's that type of fire that has helped propel this program forward. I understand that talented players and a winning record are critical but having someone to remind everyone of who we are and where we've come from is important too. Nobody is going to give WSU anything so we need someone who is willing to scratch and claw for respect, recruits, notariety etc. Maybe he overreacted in some people's eyes but it's that type of grit that has us where we are today.Last edited by jpshocker; January 23, 2014, 11:35 AM."We can't win at home. If I were outside the Shocker basketball program I would outwardly dis him like many have around the country. At the same time I would inwardly wish he coached my team. Why? He is edgy and chippy. That is the type of player he was back in the day. He didn't impress with talent, but when it came down to wanting it...he had all the intangibles covered.
There are so many athletes that have the physical gift, but they don't possess the right balance of intangibles, which can be argued are more valuable. Our coach recognizes and develops plans around the intangibles. He out works other coaches with his unique vision of how to prepare. Part of this preparation is the most important component...selling it to his players. He is a master at the selling part. In fact, I would argue it is his favorite part.
Look, our coach is not perfect by any means. What I will never question from him is his intended vision for this program, which is win with honor, integrity, toughness and passion. It's the passion part that some, outside our Shocker family, don't understand because he is not the leader of their young men.
