I got the sense that the reporter and Marshall already knew each other from the greeting at the beginning. That might make Coach's reaction more understandable. In any event, I liked his response, snark and all. If he doesn't stand up for his program, sure as hell, nobody else there will.

Regardless of the semantics of HOW the question was asked, whether the guy said "other elite" or just "elite" matters little. The question is dumb, and no answer will have depth. Coach says yes, and it's coach speak. What coach will say no to that? It's just a dumb question all around.

Marshall has a sharp edge. That's just who he is. He is not an "aw shucks" kind of guy like Henson. I think it would have been better to Marshall to get his dig in to the reporter in a lighter way, but that's just not who he is. Some Phoggies think Self is so respectful etc., but his comment about Marshall and playing WSU is really no different than Marshal; it was just done in a passive aggressive way. I'll take direct and to the point over passive aggressive any time.

Gregg was an a-hole on this call, we can sugar coat it, spin it, or make light of it all we want, but it's true. Maybe he was in a bad mood beforehand or maybe that was just his hot button that got pushed. It doesn’t really matter to me. Coach gives one of the best interviews in the business 99% of the time. If he overreacts to a question 1% of the time I can live with that, especially in a season when we are winning 100% of our games. Success/results buy you a lot of latitude in all walks of life.“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.”

Maybe there is some history between the two. Same general neck of the woods for both. Maybe this guy wasn't very nice on an article that he wrote years ago about 3G's program at Winthrop or about a program/coach that 3G worked at/for. If that is the case we will never know but if it was then 3G decided that it was payback time. The guy opened the door and 3G was ready to lower the boom. Could he have been more PC? Sure, but I think his mind was already made up if the opportunity ever arose. Do you think that he will be nice to ******* after what he said about him before the Dan Patrick interview? I myself doubt it. And as far as the phoggie bottom boys think....screw em. What are they going to do write a letter to BS and tell him they don't want to schedule us? Oh wait.

For what it's worth, a couple of years ago when Virginia Tech fired Seth Greenburg, there was speculation in Blacksburg that they should go after an up-and-coming mid-major coach to lead their basketball program. The 2 names most frequently mentioned were Marshall and Shaka Smart of VCU. I have no idea whether VT was ever in serious discussions with either one of them, or it was just fan talk. At any rate, WSU did the smart thing and gave Marshall a pay increase that year. VT, meanwhile, took the cheap route and hired a former assistant coach. The two programs have obviously gone in opposite directions since.
