Can we get a new commissioner with vision of elevating conference prestige by bringing in some top tier basketball programs? Purdy please?

But Kung, what top tier basketball program(s) could a new or current commissioner bring to the Valley? It has nothing to offer but a bunch of sisters of the poor who would b*tch and moan at anything that might cost them an extra buck. We are like a Butler who was suck in the Horizon. At least Gonzaga has BYU and St. Mary's.

Elgin could trot UConn in front of the university presidents and they would likely vote it down. Only so much the commissioner can do.

The rules of the conference need to change. So that's done slowly.

Give more vote to the top 6 schools spending money on basketball. 6 of 10 will vote yes on that. Continue to apply pressure to the schools not spending the money. I'm spitballing without numbers.

Work out an MVC Sports cable channel and Internet (roku) channel where basketball is the clear marquee sport and the teams with the best record get the spotlight.

When cutting backroom deals with prospective schools make sure they understand they immediately get a major vote based on spend and that the TV contract says teams with better records get the lions share of TV/internet video time.

Require schools to participate in specific tournies for SOS/RPI harvesting potential.

Cut backroom deal that if marquee team A joins the conference then team Z will be booted (will take a lot of finesse to work with the presidents).

Begin discussions with another conference about making up a west/east division similar to Big12 north/south.

This is all off the cuff and could all be hair brained but something can be done to elevate the MVC to the next level to where we aren't losing the Creightons, Tulsas, Cincys...

That all sounds good in theory, but I think you'd find it impossible to implement. Who is going to want to join a conference that may treat them like 2nd class citizens at some point? You'll have the bottom schools bolt when they have a chance and find difficulty filling their spots.

Well 11 schools don't seem to mind it in the Big 12.

Other than there only being 10 schools in the Big 12, I'll have to plead ignorance on their rules disparity. Are you just referring to Texas getting to have their TV network?

Actually the other schools did mind.. Mizzou,Nebrask Colorado and aTm all left. OU and OSU were ready to leave also. Texas had to give up a little bit of their clout to keep the B12 together when they realized how geographically undesirable their options were.

                        Sorry 9 schools.

Yes, it's no secret that Texas owns that conference.

I'm no commissioner and don't have answers. But the conference is going backwards, not forward (losing Creighton, not dropping the chaffe) that much is clear. This happened with plenty of time to get creative and make substantial change happen and with plenty of opportunities out there. But instead we did nothing and lost Creighton. And then to plug the hole in the dam we did it with LoChic. Maybe not the worst add ever but hardly a major step forward.

Yes but they put up with it for a loooong time.

But I'm not saying that the conference should be so lopsided toward one entity. You can empower a majority of the conference without totally upsetting it. And if structured in such a way that the teams equally commit to basketball then the balance can stay reasonable.

It's really sad that we don't have any rival left in our conference. Loyola will never be good enough to rival us, frankly. And on top of everything else, once we get to the first of the year and start conference play there is no margin for any error at all -- absolutely any loss to any other team in our conference this year is going to be viewed as a very bad loss. It says a lot that a school like Belmont was much happier to go to the OVC than to come and join the MVC. I wish we could get out of this conference right now and start playing with schools that are more our peers. Maybe the A-10 will lose some teams in the next couple of years and open its doors for us to come over there.

Any teams the A-10 may lose will probably make a move much less inviting.
