Shockers vs Oklahoma Baptist game thread

There were way too many calls in our favor that were madenning. Twice Cotton beat his defender to have a touch foul called. Cotton had the advantage. I hate it.

The foul calling impeded the flow of the game, and the game became boring. Now, anyone that drives to the basket can get a foul called, and get to the free throw line, that is not basketball.

New Players that impressed me, Coleby and Holland
Players that did not impress me, Lufile, Wiggins, Carter
Players that might just need more court time - Carter, Morris (see his potential) Wggins, Green

Wiggins was very good... Fed the post, played defense, took care of the ball except for one late turnover, and finished some nice plays.

Carter had 6 points in 12 minutes, on 2 of six shooting. I thought his shot selection was good, and expect that hook to be more of a 60% type shot. One rebound was disappointing, but 1 assist, 0 turnovers and a steal. If he played 24 minutes, he'd have 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Other than rebounding,that's a line I'd take every time.

Seven months between Shocker basketball seemed like 17 months.

What an exhibition performance...even against a top-notched NAIA program.

PG play will not suffer from a year ago, even though FVV and Mal are two very different PG's. Mal was explosively fast and quick, got to the rim and played great defense. FVV gets the job done with his savvy and IQ. Baker proved last year he can play PG in small segments against top-quality teams. Holland appears to have what it takes to spell FVV and Cotton is seasoned enough to handle small doses as well. My take is we suffer not from last year.

We are deeeeeeep at the 2 and 3, a notch better than last year (no disrespect to D-Will). Baker is a year more seasoned, and healthier. He is the total package, shooter, passer, defender, rebounder, moves will off-ball, LEADER. Cotton is a better shooter this year, his rebounding is unquestioned and all the other skills needed for these two positions. Wessel is just a half notch below Baker's skills and is healthy. I enjoyed watching Wiggins last night. He seemed comfortable and in control. He finished plays, defended and took care of the ball (except for very late). Green is...well, green. He needs another year to be a factor in the rotation, but in a pinch can break a zone.

We will be fine in the "bigs" area. The loss of Carl Hall, on the court, will be felt for awhile. EO is one of the finest young men to ever be called a Shocker off the floor, but replacing him on the court will be easy with Coleby. He has good hands and has a nice display of moves down low. He can block shots, while defending on-ball very well and don't worry, he will rebound just fine. With a year in the system CJ will play nicely behind Coleby and contribute in a positive way. Cle could have a monster year. As great as he will be individually, he still will turn heads in other areas associated with team success. I think ultimately Carter will be a better all-=around player than Hall was (and that is saying alot). Little Shaq, if he doesn't redshirt, will have opportunities to shine and develop.

We could see some interesting lineups due to our diverse skill-set across the roster. I can't wait to see this team develop into a top-10 caliber team, which it will for sure. Stay tuned Shocker fans!!!

Agree !!! Looked more like an old fashioned hook than a baby hook to me, but I like it!!! Hopefully it will go down as he gets more experience and the nerves go away. Yes he needs to hit the boards harder but he obviously has some talent and another thing I like is his long arms, will help him to block shots and get in the passing lanes, those two things are going to be more important than ever with the new rules allowing offensive players to get to the hoop uncontested, will need guys who can stay off their man and sky to block the shot.

The Bison, who have been ranked in 64-consecutive polls, are coming off a 25-8 season. They will have to replace leading scorer and Third- Team All-American David Johnson. Oklahoma Baptist now enjoys a top 10 ranking for the 33rd time in the last 34 polls.

KC is a monster. He can score the rock. OkBap was packing it in under the rim BIG TIME and he was still getting it done. There were so many bodies packed in under the rim I don't see how you can judge the front court's ability to rebound from that game. But he was still clearly dominant down low. I dunno -- I'm just stoked with the big man.

As far as free throws go, I think most people judged our throws on the first half and then left the game not realizing that we tore it up in the second half. We were only 2 throws short from shooting 75%. Does that make you feel any better about shooting 67.9% on 19 of 28 throws? It does me.

It makes me feel a whole lot better. I know when EO went to the line women and small children took cover.

I'm not too worried about the big man rebounding. Kadeem and Darius, in particular, were going up and rebounding above the rim. Their vertical game may prove to be a good thing with the new rules and all. A player with a more physical approach, ala Carl Hall, could end up in constant foul trouble.

Great rebounder are great, not because they jump high, but instead because they get great position (and are tall), or they get great position and have great/fierce energy (Marshall would call them ball getters). Colby did a nice job against a team of lesser inside players than he'll play later in our schedule. Early did ok, and Carter, Lufile, Green, and Morris did not show.
