  • Financial Metrics: 3G and WSU versus the MVC

Marshall's new contract just gives more ammunition to the idea that most of our MVC conference brethren are our fiscal bitches.

As of next April, 3G will now make more in personal base salary alone than the entire men's basketball budget of ISU Blue (lol), and with his incentives included likely nearly as much as essentially half of our conference.

    MBB Expenses (aka: Budget):

    WSU - $4,644,724
    Creighton (for reference) - $4,404,350
    Bradley - $3,846,345
    Loyola - $3,108,157
    UNI - $2,449,710
    Drake -$2,226,291
    ISU Red - $2,183,876
    Evansville - $2,133,520
    SIU - $2,063,684
    MSU - $1,899,281
    HCGM Base Salary - $1,750,000
    ISU Blue - $1,704,707

It's even further humorous when a person stops to look at overall athletic department revenue at our non-football school, as compared to our public school conference mates with football, and our private school conference mates without football. We lead the conference even though we lack football.

    2012 AD Revenues:

    WSU (no football) - $19,792,391
    SIU (football) - $19,671,796
    ISU Red (football) - $18,631,777
    Creighton (no football)(for reference) - $15,062,122
    UNI (football) - $14,632,492
    MSU (football) - $13,605,468
    ISU Blue (football) - $12,394,542
    Bradley (no football) - $12,987,000
    Evansville (no football) - $10,043,793
    Drake (no football) - $12,964,153
    Loyola (no football) - $10,386,126

Suffice to say, we are a man amongst boys, and truly are not a good fit for the MVC when financial metrics are examined - especially with the Big Priest deflection of CU.

And when you add the 501k for our assistants, that is more than half of the Valley teams.

Is a 501k some kind of new retirement plan? Is it better than a 401k?

A 401k is so poor these days that they've had to up it to 501k in order to make it look more beneficial.

Actually the Drake does have football. They play FCS (division 1 football) but It is not in the same conference as our other Valley brethren. The Drake plays in the Pioneer League (the same football conference as Butler, Valpo and Dayton among others). Evansville also used to play football in the Pioneer League (both Drake and UE were charter members) until the Aces dropped football in 1997.

It's non scholarship football though and isn't really comparable to the others that play

It is non-scholarship but they do play in the FCS (the same as the other Valley members) and the Pioneer League does now have an automatic bid to the same FCS national championship tournament. While the Drake saves money on scholarships they have to spend more on travel. The Pioneer League extends from New York (Marist) to Florida (Stetson and Jacksonville) to California (San Diego). At least Drake is in the middle of the country but it is still a lot of travel.

One other interesting tidbit, Patty Viverito (Assoc. Commissioner of the Valley) is listed as both the Commissioner of the Missouri Valley Football Conference AND the Commissioner of the Pioneer League. She essentially is the head of two conferences and is the Associate Commissioner of a third one.

Even if the saved cost of not having scholarships were off set (probably not) by the cost of longer distance travel, they still do not have all the costs associated with scholarships, travel, and so forth of the women sports other FCS leagues have to balance their football scholarships.

It can't even be in the same stratosphere can it? [5 (road games of air travel per year) x 80 bodies (including coaches) x $400 per ticket (assuming retail rates)] +[5 (road games) x 40 rooms (they're livin' large) x $300 (staying at the Ritz)] = $220,000/yr for travel. Add some high class 5 course meals if you want ... $250,000.

Scholarships are in the magnitude of millions. 100 scholarships (shooting low) x $15,000 (annual tuition from their site .. doesn't include additional $4000 in room and board) = $1,500,000.

Careful guys, you're going to get the Shocker football train going again, and that always leads to someone claiming it would cost $100M to bring back football.

                          I'll just put this here:

Relatively recognizable schools with D1 FBS football who have overall athletic department revenue and/or a budget lower than football-less WSU:

                          UTSA
                          Nevada
                          Southern Miss
                          Toledo
                          Utah State
                          Bowling Green
                          North Texas
                          Louisiana Tech
                          Louisiana Lafayette
