Not sure that is really possible. SIU's collapse under Chris Lowery was something that might be difficult to duplicate even if you were trying to outdo them on the downslide.

True, but if I was going to try and duplicate it, my first three steps would be:

      1. dismiss entire team
      2. recruit coaches and players with a questionable background
      3. don't hold them accountable for their actions

Now, after I set that into motion, the following should occur:

      1. Lose lots of games
      2. Lose control of the team

The only thing that is missing is an administration that allows above said behavior and results to continue uninterrupted.
      Livin the dream

The only thing missing part of the equation is in place because they are the ones that brought the coach onto campus and placed him in charge. To rein him in or censure him would be admitting that you screwed up in hiring him and letting it get to this stage. Nothing will happen until it reaches epic/siu proportions.

In 2007, Southern Illinois was a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament (its sixth straight NCAA bid), made a Sweet 16, and should have beat Kansas that round (refs made a couple creative calls in that game...imagine that...Beakers getting bad calls to go their way). Three measly years later, the Salukis concluded their season on Thursday night in St. Louis. That is an epic free fall.

There were two obviously wrong calls that went against SIU, each led to two points for KU. SIU lost by three points. KU got a very big break in that game.

It's not fair to compare ISU to SIU, because SIU had some amazing basketball teams year after year. Illinois State would have to actually achieve something of significance before we can call it a collapse.

Or, even worse, a lose at all costs program.

Sounds a little like WSU, except GM beat us fair and square and it only took us two years to get bounced on Thursday. After that, things turned around...

We also dealt with a coaching change and player changes that come from that. We also hadn't been on a lengthy NCAA bid run like Southern Illinois had.

This that and these. Yeah it was a bit of a fall, but not the free fall SIU went through. Have they even hit the ground yet? Poor Barry

How they won 11 Valley games the last 2 seasons I'll never know. Of course 1 of the 11 wins prevented the '10-'11 team from getting into the NCAA tournament, and last years' debacle kept the team from a conference championship, so I'm not going to lose any sleep if we torch them by 40+ in both games this season, even though I respect the hell out of Barry.

Good points. I am just saying success can be fickle. But absolutely that kind of free fall is unimaginable with HCGM staying at the helm. I think MT might have ended up on Thursday night in 06-07, especially losing Brauer. Hard to know but there was a lot of negative energy around the program his last year.
